Raise4Rwanda started in the summer of 2020 during Covid restrictions in West Yorkshire when Amanda Gallon was inspired to support her friends Kendi and Pacifique in their vision to build a school in their local community of Musanze, Rwanda. The school 'Glorious Academy' that Kendi had been running for the previous 4 years sadly had to close as the classrooms were overcrowded and didn't meet new s
ocial distancing restrictions. The aim of the school is to provide a quality education for the children in the local community. The amount initially needed to buy the land and build two classrooms is £8,000. Amanda started by walking the 3 peaks and raised almost £1000. Others, family friends and the local Halifax Central Church caught the vision and the Raise4Rwanda team was born. Kendi is a Pastor, teacher, business woman, a mother of 5 children and a wife to Pastor Pacifique. Currently they live in Musanze. From a very young age Kendi has had a heart and a calling to educate the poorest and deprived children. She started home schooling children 10 years ago and established the ‘Glorious Academy’ in 2016 and has been providing quality pre-school education ( 3-5years) to children. The vision: To build an independent Christian School in Musanze. To provide an excellent education and support to children who are poor or abandoned, and from the deprived local areas. To educate low income families, and young single mothers in the importance of children’s education and to provide them with skills to enable and encourage them to send their children to school. To buy land, initially build two large school rooms with rooms to extend
Why is the school so important? Currently only 18% percent of children between the ages of 3-5 have access to pre school education. These first developmental years are crucial to the course of each child's life. The new school will seek to enhance the early development of the children through education, good nutrition, hygiene & protection. Knowing the importance of nutrition on brain development a nutrition programme was initiated following a trip to Rwanda in 2019 by 4 members of Halifax Central Church. This programme helped pay towards breakfast for children that couldn't afford it in school and would otherwise go hungry. This initiative was called 'Breakfast Rwanda' the initiative has been temporarily suspended whilst the school is closed due to lockdown restrictions but will hopefully be reinstated once the new school is opened. Only 10% of children have finished primary school by the age of 13. By providing a school of quality education Kendi will support children in completing each year at the age expected without needing to repeat school years. Ensuring the children have completed their exams & are ready for high school at the age of 13.
