Bracknell Film Society is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run film society set up to encourage interest in film as an art form, and to promote the study and appreciation of films. We screen on the second Tuesday of every month at the South Hill Park cinema, often adding a further film later in the month. We show interesting and unusual features, documentaries, shorts and classics not readily available

in the local area and we meet in the bar afterwards to talk about the film and cinema generally. We run a Film Society Study Group that meets monthly.

This is primary-colour, major-key storytelling. It is disarming, charming and unafraid to be sincere – especially when it comes to the sparks of inspiration, creativity and connection that are so fundamental to human existence – LITTLE WHITE LIES

Breathless (12A) at South Hill Park
On the Big Screen – In Partnership with South Hill Park
Thursday 11 June – South Hill Park Cinema – 7:00pm

There is simply no other film which demonstrates so perfectly what it feels like to be young and in love. GUARDIAN

Directed by Jean-Luc Godard | Drama | 90 mins | France | 1960 | French with English subtitles

Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean Seberg, Jean-Luc Godard

A small-time crook, hunted by the authorities for a car theft and the murder of a police officer, attempts to persuade a hip American student to run away with him to Italy. The architype of the French New Wave, Godard’s gritty and engaging first feature had an almost revolutionary impact when first released. If you’ve never seen it, here is a rare opportunity to enjoy this classic on the big screen.

Jean-Luc Godard’s cock-of-the-walk calling card, mixing pulp pastiche and upstart rebellion with Jean-Paul Belmondo’s footloose Parisian delinquent. BFI

Ran (15) at South Hill Park
On the Big Screen – In Partnership with South Hill Park
Wednesday 15 July - South Hill Park Cinema - 7:00pm

By turns achingly delicate and bracingly violent, Ran is the last great masterpiece of Akira Kurosawa - GUARDIAN

Directed by Akira Kurosawa | Historical epic | 161 mins | France/Japan | 1985 | Japanese with English subtitles

Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Terao, Jinpachi Nezu

After a lifetime of brutal rule, ageing feudal lord Hidetora tells his three sons Taro, Jiro and Saburo that he intends to abdicate, leaving the kingdom divided between them. Baffled, Saburo derides this plan, earning banishment, and the remaining two brothers, greedy and duplicitous in ways they have clearly inherited from their now fatuously sentimental father, plunge the country into chaotic civil war, incited by Taro’s wife Lady Kaede. Hidetora loses his mind with anguish and horror, and roams the vast plain, with his jester Kyoami and his loyal vassal Tango.

There is not a wasted second... Kurosawa is a director who becomes godlike rather than gaga in old age – FINANCIAL TIMES

Ultimately, California Schemin’ is fun. The jokes are great, and the narrative tightly constructed – FILM IRELAND MAGAZINE

Redoubt (12A) at South Hill Park
Tue 09 Jun | South Hill Park Arts Centre

Directed by John Skoog | Drama | 85 mins | Sweden/Denmark | 2025 | Swedish with English subtitles

Skoog immerses us in the remarkable true story of Karl-Göran Persson, a farm worker in a small village who, inspired by a government Cold War pamphlet, spent decades fortifying his home against nuclear attack. Exquisitely shot in black and white using a recreation of the home bunker that Persson created, Skoog shows us the lengths he went to in order to secure scrap for his project, not to keep out his local community but in a bid to protect them.

This measured and meticulous cinema triumph is a celebration of eccentricity and determination – Glasgow Film Theatre
