The Department for Education is seeking views on proposed school exclusion reforms, including support during suspensions, reintegration following suspension, and access to schoolwork during periods of exclusion.

If you are a parent or carer of a child with SEND, or have experience of suspension or exclusion, your voice matters.

We’ve officially reached that point in the autumn term…
The “there is ONE WEEK LEFT and I am running purely on caffeine and stubbornness” stage.

If your week has included:

🍁 A child insisting their coat is “too coat‑y”
📚 School sending three letters, two reminders and one mystery form you swear you’ve never seen before
🧃 A lunchbox returning home with the exact same food you lovingly packed that morning
🎒 A bag that somehow contains 47 loose papers and a single, unidentifiable object
🧠 Your brain whispering “just keep going… you’re nearly there”
😵‍💫 And the general vibe of “I thought it was Friday three days ago”

Awareness is only the beginning. Families need understanding, informed responses, and professionals who feel confident recognising CPA and its impact. No parental figure should ever feel alone in this.

💼 A Busy Week for Bracknell Forest Parent Carer Forum

It’s been another full week of representing families and strengthening co‑production across the SEND system. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been involved in:

🧠 Neurodiversity Strengths & Needs Tool Working Group
We met with Parent Carer Forums across Berkshire to continue shaping the development of the ND tool.

📊 Data Development Group
Working together to improve how data is used to understand needs and drive better decision‑making.

📘 SEND & AP Strategy Update
Continuing to influence the strategy so it reflects lived experience and focuses on improving outcomes.

🔍 Inspection Readiness Preparation
Supporting preparation groups to ensure parent carer voice is central as the local area moves toward reinspection.

🏥 Meeting with BHFT Directors & Berkshire PCFs
Discussing priorities, challenges and opportunities across health services for children and young people with SEND.

🤝 SEND Reform Co‑production Workstream
Contributing to national and local reform discussions to ensure changes are shaped by families.

🌱 Strengthening the Forum for the Long Term
Meetings focused on sustainability, governance and ensuring the PCF remains a strong, independent voice for families.

🧡 Connections Live — Monday 7th September
📍 The Oaks 🕰️ 9:30–11:30am A relaxed in‑person space to meet, share, and be with others who get it.
💻 Connections Evening Online — Thursday 15th
🕰️ 7–8pm Join from home for an hour of connection and conversation.
💛 Connections Lunch Online — Friday 16th
🕰️ 12–1pm A gentle midday pause with other parent carers.

📣 MAD, SAD, GLAD — What Parent Carers Told Us
We’ve shared our full MAD, SAD, GLAD sentiment report with Ofsted.

💥 MAD Parents are exhausted by having to fight for support. The frustration comes from systems that make help hard to access, slow to arrive, or dependent on persistence rather than need.
💧 SAD The human cost is real. When support is delayed, unavailable, or inappropriate, children lose education, wellbeing deteriorates, families become isolated, stress rises, and the future feels uncertain.
🌟 GLAD Families value what works: their children, supportive relationships, the parent‑carer community, professionals who genuinely listen, and moments when the system collaborates instead of blocks.
🔍 The question every part of the SEND partnership should be asking:
“What is the impact of this decision, delay or lack of provision on this child or young person — and what needs to happen to make sure their needs are met?”
Parent carers are calling for a shift from process‑led decision‑making to needs‑led, child‑centred decision‑making.
That’s the message we’re taking forward.
