A ruined church…an eroded coast…footprints in the dust…the dregs of a drink… these are all traces, remains and Vestiges of past events, and the inspiration for this project, inspired by landscape and plein-air painter Frances Hatch.

For over a year, a group of Bournemouth Arts Club members have been soaking up Vestiges of the past - ancient and recent, in all their forms. Now, at this exciting new space in Boscombe’s Sovereign Centre, we present our responses, our discoveries and our ideas, in a multi-media exhibition under the banner of Southern Contemporaries, an exhibiting arm of the Bournemouth Arts Club.

TUSSOCK, Kiki Birtles

We walk through Dorset's countryside over its hills and through its valleys, feeling the ridges of iron age hill forts and bronze age earthworks beneath our feet, further rounding its once imposing bright chalk fortresses into rolling grass hills.

TUSSOCK explores what is left behind, what lies beneath, and how our "natural" beauty has been shaped and formed over millennia by human intervention.

TUSSOCK is an installation based around a series of costumes to be worn in the landscape, creating a connection between the wearer and the environment by turning them into one of the grassy ramparts of the hill fort. The work questions how contemporary and future generations will create space for themselves against a backdrop of rigid preservation. What should we leave behind and what should we return to nature?

Focusing on the music of Footfall by Aidan Goozee


This album explores life's liminal states; its use of ambience is designed to create a sense of nostalgia for what once was, as each track is named after a memory that had significant impact on Aidan growing up.

Footfall is intended to make the listener reflect on their journey through life and all it took to get where they are today, how we as people are stronger than we give ourselves credit for. The ambient melody's combined with the upbeat drums work together to not push the mood in any one direction but allow the listener to drive the narrative themselves.

Footfall is the first album of Aidan's larger project and other alias "Knotweed". It's designed to set the stage of what's to come later down the line and allow Aidan to show his style in a new environment.

Footfall is not just a standalone album but also a supporting piece designed to exaggerate and add depth to the artwork within the space, forming a complete multimedia experience.

Shadows From The Hill explores the material and metaphysical footprints that we leave on the environment. After having moved from the countryside to the city Sophie found that she desired the connection that she had to the environment whilst growing up in Dorset. Helsby Hill Camp in Cheshire provided the connection to nature that she had desired and led to even further research into those that inhabited them.

Since witnessing a fire that erupted across Holt Heath 9 August 2025, Annabel began to create images documenting the aftermath of the blaze. She explored the impact damaged shrubland had on the local wildlife, and symbolised the emotional distress felt by the community, heightened by evidence the fire was started deliberately, with a predicted 50- 70 years recovery time.

Annabel used analogue and alternative techniques to visualise the destructive embers that transformed the heath into an inhospitable, alien landscape. She discovered there is an unusual beauty in the decay compared to the untouched heathland...

The exhibition title 'Sting' emerges from the emotional impact of rejection, a shared experience that many artists navigate when maintaining a creative practice. Whilst also drawing parallel with the literal definition of the sting of an Auger sea snail.
