New name, same principles

Yesterday the Urban Coffee Collective relaunched as the Cowork Collective. We believe that working alone is better in good company.

On a mission When the club launched in January 2019 it had a simple mission: to provide a space where freelancers and small business owners could work alongside each other and get to know each other like colleagues. Perhaps one day we’d have a night out or even a Christmas Do. It was a simple ambition born from my own sense of isolation.

What it is not This club is not a networking morning; for me, these are often a waste of valuable time. I need to fit the main bulk of my work into 6 short hours while the children are at school. I can’t spare 3 or 4 hours for networking when it’s usually not my client base.

And this club is not a coworking office; I can’t justify paying for all-day access and parking on top when I only have limited work hours. And I don’t need a dedicated desk space; I have that at home. I figured other people might be in the same situation.

What it is A space where we can escape our own four walls, say hi to some friendly faces, and get work done for the price of a coffee. Putting these things together was harder than you might think.

My ethos The independent coffee shops I like to support don’t get much benefit from someone taking a table for hours on end and only buying one drink. There is always Costa, but it doesn’t always have a work atmosphere - fair enough, it isn’t an office. I needed something different for this club: a community space or a local business that would benefit from inviting local small businesses in for a morning on a regular basis. A place where we could work and feel welcome. That’s all.

That ethos remains the same. All the Cowork Collective pop-up work spaces are hosted by community spaces and family-run local businesses. They are chosen because they offer workplace essentials. Freelance workspace essentials include free parking, great WiFi, excellent coffee, and comfortable spots to work in.

Our cowork pop-ups remain free to all users so that no-one is excluded. That decision was hard to reach as the last year has revealed it takes time, effort and actual money to run this resource. But I don’t want anyone to feel stuck at home and unable to escape the isolation that can bring.
