It’s Drowning Prevention Week, ’s annual campaign to raise awareness, start conversations and equip families with the knowledge and skills to stay safe around water.
With the weather improving and the school holidays fast approaching the risk of accidental drowning increases, especially around open water.
So what can you do to stay safe?
Whenever you’re around water:
✋ STOP & THINK
Take time to assess your surroundings. Look for the dangers and always research local signs and advice.
🤝 STAY TOGETHER
When around water always go with friends or family. Swim at a lifeguarded venue (linked below).
In an emergency:
📱 CALL 999
If you’re at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Don’t enter the water yourself to rescue.
⭐ FLOAT TO LIVE
If you fall in or become tired - Stay calm, float on your back and call for help. If someone else has fallen in, throw them something that floats.
Try discussing these steps with friends and family and talk about how you’ll stay safe around the water this summer.
