A service is to be held this weekend in tribute to seven Second World War airmen who died in a crash near Boston.
The Seven Lights at Sunset Ceremony will take place on Sunday (October 18) at 6pm.

It will be held at the recently completed R5683 Memorial near Benington.

This is an inaugural service in tribute to the seven men of Lancaster R5683, who lost their lives on July 26, 1942. It is hoped it will become an annual tribute.

The crew reflected the international character of RAF Bomber Command during the Second World War. They included a Welshman, a Scotsman, an Australian and a Canadian, with the remaining crew members from Yorkshire, Berkshire and Suffolk. There were no survivors.

Anyone wishing to attend is asked to assemble at 5.45pm, at the bottom of the track from the memorial, which is located off Sea Lane (at ///latitudes.boots.visions on what3words.com).

The owner of a farm in Lincolnshire is looking for relatives of the crew of 61 Sqn Lancaster W4830. The aircraft crashed on the farm on the 26th June 1943 and a cairn memorial has been built at the site. The farmer is keen to invite as many of the descendants and family of the crew as he can.

Two of the crew were killed:

Kenneth Lloyd

The other 5 survived:

Sgt David Henry Pearce (who later published his memoires, Dark Skies and Dead Reckoning)
Sgt R Everett
Sgt J Robson
Sgt J Penswick
Sgt Arthur Bradley Woodvine, who was killed in April 1944 aboard Lancaster JA695.

From Jamaica to the RAF: Ralph Ottey’s Wartime Journey ✈️

Inspired by Winston Churchill’s speeches, 19-year-old Ralph Ottey made the life-changing decision to join the RAF while working as a pupil-teacher in Jamaica during the Second World War.

Selected for training as a wireless operator/air gunner, Ralph joined recruits from across the British West Indies at Port Royal in 1944, beginning an extraordinary journey that would take him from Jamaica to the UK.

Starting this Friday!! 2nd October 2026
Do you have some model kits in your loft you've been meaning to make for years? Or perhaps you'd just like to get back into modelling again. We're going to open our NAAFI doors to all those who would like to do some model building and meet like-minded people. Please feel free to bring your own or purchase a kit from our shop. It's not limited to Airfix so if you have another set you would like to build feel free! Please bring your own tools and glue with you as these will be not provided. We will not be able to store your models on site so please come prepared for taking your models home with you at the end of the session.

This is held in our NAAFI so admission fee is not required but if you wished to enter the museum the normal admission fee would still be payable.

The club is open to everyone from beginners to the experienced modeller. It's not a class but an opportunity to meet together and share knowledge. To give us an idea of numbers we would appreciate places being pre-booked if you would like to attend although this is not essential.

The Westminster Abbey service for the 86th anniversary of the Battle of Britain will be streamed live tomorrow, Sunday 20th September, at 11 am.

The RAF is proud to commemorate the few who were supported by the many.
