Historia Normannis Bolton

Historia Normannis Bolton The Bolton cell of the medieval living history society, Historia Normannis.

Historia Normannis is a nationwide medieval re-enactment society with local groups all over the country. Historia Normannis take part in exciting historical and battle displays across the country, showing the public how the medieval English lived and fought. During the off-season (September to March) we learn medieval combat - using steel weapons! - and authentic medieval crafts as we prepare all

our clothing and gear for the summer show season. We are always recruiting new members who want to get involved in bringing history to life! There's so much to get involved with - archery, leather-working, performance, calligraphy, music, smithing - all you need to bring is enthusiasm; you don't even need to know your history at first , because we can help with that! We train at Queen's Park, Bolton every Sunday - it's free to take part, so come say hi!

Our next show is at Happy Mount Park in Morecambe!

The medieval English would have a slightly different relationship with death than we do today. It was really important how you lived your life knowing that after you were gone, your existence thereafter would be the consequence. A real belief in heaven and fear of hell drove (most) people to (ideally) virtuous lives of obedience to the order impressed upon them. When someone died it was thought best they do so with grace to model the Christ figure, hence even criminals brought to hang would show remorse in the end. And after the death, loved ones would pray for the departed's soul, so it that might stay out of hell and pass out of purgatory to heaven. And there were may ways to die in the medieval world that we would not even think normal today, from simple diseases to random small wounds due to infection, to exposure and starvation in winter; today we would see these as a mark of extreme poverty, but every season these would be everyday tragic news to the people of Norman England

Ultimately, History™ is not just about the big picture, but the small lives that wove through the period, adding up to a rich tapestry. We want to give these lives new breath and light for your entertainment and education, and we hope you come see us this summer to learn more about those who came before us

D'aaaw! While it's easy to sterotype medieval people has hard and cynical, this is also an era where romance and poetry are valourised by the nobility. While marriages among the upper class were generally for advantage, it would still be important that the couple be compatible to create a functioning and successful household. And of course, many wonderful couples have met through Normannis activities, and they have veen gone on to bring their children along

History is obviously at the core of what we do. For some of it's a list of names and dates, easily disconnected from our world - it might as well be fiction. For groups like ours it's a tangible thing we place ourselves in to achieve a better understanding. But the stories of the great people, the battles, are still relevant - things would have been very different without William and Hastings! Through both the academic and the experimental we get as close as we can to the past, for your entertainment and education!

The pretty colours aren't just fun to look at! On the battefield these would be cruical in determining friend from foe. Bearing arms on a shield and surcoat, or forming on a banner made the sides clear and (hopefully) avoided tragic blunders. Come to our events and see if your can pick out the different coats of arms from all around the country!
