A Story of Strength, Courage and Family
A few weeks ago, our Believe Achieve family received some devastating news.
One of our much-loved Youth Workers, Shona, shared that doctors had discovered cancerous cells during medical investigations. What followed was a whirlwind of hospital appointments, biopsies, uncertainty, fear and heartbreak. During this same period, Shona also suffered the loss of her pregnancy and faced personal challenges that would have tested even the strongest of people.
There were tears. There were difficult conversations. There were days when the future felt uncertain.
But one thing never changed.
She was never alone.
At Believe Achieve, we are more than a youth club. We are more than colleagues. We are more than volunteers.
We are family.
From the moment Shona shared her diagnosis, staff, volunteers, young people and supporters rallied around her with encouragement, prayers, love and support.
One particularly special moment came when television presenter and cancer survivor davinamccall kindly recorded a personal video message for Shona. It brought tears to many eyes and reminded us that hope can appear when we need it most. Thank you, Davina, for your kindness.
Today, we are delighted to share some wonderful news.
Shona has successfully come through surgery with no complications and her recovery is progressing well.
True to form, her message afterwards perfectly captured her spirit:
“They can take pieces of me, but they can never take my personality.”
Her courage, positivity and determination have inspired us all.
To every young woman reading this: please listen to your body, attend your appointments and never ignore concerns. Early checks and early action can save lives.
Shona, your Believe Achieve family is proud of you, standing with you and cheering you on every step of the way.
Shared with Shona’s full permission.
