What a fantastic day at the home of Bolton Wanderers Football Club! 💙

Despite the pouring rain, our young people showed determination, teamwork and a brilliant attitude as We Shine Any Car made its stadium debut! 🙌

A huge thank you to Bolton Wanderers in the Community and everyone who supported us.

This is about more than washing cars. It’s about building confidence, developing skills and creating real opportunities for young people.

A SCRAPYARD SAVED HIS LIFE. PROVE HIM WRONG.

Young people don’t lack ambition. They lack a real chance to prove it.

Luis spent two years feeling isolated, worthless and shut out of work. At Genuine Futures, he found purpose, trusted relationships and a place to belong. Now he has a job, practical skills and prospects. Cameron says he has “a life now basically”, and after two weeks away, he couldn’t wait to return.

That is what the Daily Mirror saw at our Bolton scrapyard and car-washing business: not forgotten young people, but young people with potential who needed a different route forward.

Qualifications matter. They are only part of the answer. We also need prevention, community organisations, trusted adults and support that continues beyond the school day.

We have supported almost 100 young people into work and training. The message is simple: opportunity changes what young people believe is possible.

“I’ve got a life now.”

That was Cameron’s message after finding his place at Genuine Futures’ scrapyard and car-washing business.

Before joining us, he had left college, lost confidence, and struggled to find work. He couldn’t see a future ahead. Now he is learning practical skills, contributing to a team, and moving forward with purpose.

Luis knows that feeling too. After two years of isolation and frustration, he found work, confidence, and a sense of belonging with us.

These stories show what becomes possible when young people receive more than a qualification. They need trusted relationships, practical opportunities, support beyond the school day, and people who refuse to write them off.

The Daily Mirror has shared what is happening here in Bolton. We want decision-makers to listen to young people and grassroots organisations when shaping the response to the NEET crisis.

Has a young person stopped showing up, and you’re calling it a motivation problem?

That assumption can hide what’s really happening. Luis spent two years feeling isolated and unable to find work. At our Bolton scrapyard and car-washing business, he found purpose, trusted support and practical work. Now he says, “I’m a new person” and feels part of society again.

This is why tackling the NEET crisis needs more than education reform alone. Young people also need trusted adults, real opportunities and support that continues beyond the school day. Qualifications matter, but they are only part of the answer.

Our young people from Genuine Futures are outside the home of Bolton Wanderers, sharing why Wanderers fans and the wider community should stand behind Bolton’s next generation.

Through We Shine Any Car, young people gain real experience in teamwork, customer service, enterprise, responsibility and showing up. It is something genuine, practical and tangible—an investment people can see creating change.

The NEET crisis has been unfolding for 40 years. Young people cannot wait another decade. We need a properly funded action plan with measurable progress at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months.

A scrapyard saved Luis. Prove that pressure works better.

After two years without work, Luis felt isolated and worthless. A job at Genuine Futures gave him purpose, routine and a team. He learned practical skills, built confidence and started seeing prospects instead of dead ends.

That is what the debate about young people not in education, employment or training must include. Qualifications matter. But they are only part of the answer.

Young people also need:

✔ Grassroots support
✔ Real work and practical skills
✔ Pathways that continue beyond the school day

We cannot lecture young people into a future they cannot see. We need to build routes into it, and listen to the organisations already doing that work in our communities.
