Title: Adventure Neuroscience – How the Brain Responds to Extreme Challenge in the Wild

Speaker: Dave Gallagher, Chartered Psychologist and Adventure Neuroscientist

Cognitive Psychologist and Neuroscientist Dave Gallagher examines how humans perform under intense stress in real-world high-challenge settings, from mountaineering and cave diving to BASE jumping and high-risk work environments. Drawing on established research in stress physiology, brain organisation and cognitive control — alongside his own attempts to study these processes “in the wild” — he explores what is currently known about how the brain manages fear, focus and decision-making when the stakes are high, and how this can benefit anyone without the need to go to such extremes.

Talk begins 6.30pm prompt – arrive early to be sure of a seat. All welcome, no charge!

Past Scibar speaker Ayo Olanrewaju's research study is now seeking participants:

Have you had a knee replacement and tracked your physical activity? We need YOU!

About the research
In the United Kingdom, approximately 100,000 knee replacement surgeries are performed each year to relieve pain and improve mobility. While we know a lot about reducing pain, we know less about how physical activity changes after knee replacement. We invite you to take part in a University of Manchester-led study to explore how people recover after knee replacement surgery.

You can take part if:
• You have had a partial/total knee replacement anywhere in the UK (not including Scotland).
• You had knee replacement surgery between 1st of January 2017 and 31st December 2023.
• 18 or older when you had the knee replacement.
• You monitored your physical activity at least six months before and one year after your knee replacement surgery using any of the following devices:
• Apple watch
• iPhone
• Oura Ring
• Fitbit

Why join our research?
Your participation will help us learn how people recover after knee replacement, so that in the future people and doctors can make better informed decisions about knee replacement surgery.

Research funded by The University of Manchester and the Medical Research Council
