Join our FREE Workshop at Discovering42 to create your own mythical shadow automaton.

The workshop is inspired by GRIT Productions’ Shadow Lounge: The Re-Awakening. An immersive world of Bodmin-born myths, spoken word and shadow. Your finished shadow box will become part of the production before being available to collect after the run; full details will be shared at the workshop.

Suitable for families and individuals, with no experience needed.

The sessions will be led by us, with GRIT's Artistic Director Rob Mennear also taking part and happy to answer any questions about Shadow Lounge: The Re-Awakening.

WORKSHOPS: Saturday 17th October at 1pm - 2pm or 2:30pm - 3:30pm.

As requested, we are trialling an Autumn Membership so you can visit as often as you like from now until the end of December. With 10% off workshops too!

We will also be open 9.30am-4.30pm everyday with Saturday until 6pm and review hours again in January. Extended hours during holidays. We will be adding more workshops soon, including home-ed, after-school and evening workshops, so keep an eye out on the website and we will try post them on here too..

We want Discovering42 to be a place where you can make yourself at home rather than squeeze everything into one visit. Explore our hands-on exhibition, settle into the café to lose yourself in a book from our collection or get stuck in with a project.

When the summer bustle fades and the darkness draws in, it’s nice to have a cosy space to spend a grey afternoon, find a little inspiration and enjoy being around other interesting people.

Join us in Discovering42’s new makerspace on 1 November for a free clock-making workshop celebrating John Arnold, the pioneering Bodmin based clockmaker.

John Arnold (1736) became one of Britain’s most important precision watchmakers, developing marine chronometers that helped sailors calculate their position at sea.

Design and decorate your own working clock to take home, and try some hands-on experiments exploring the fascinating science of time. Materials will be provided, but we would love donations of small toys and trinkets (even if they are broken or missing parts!).

It’s also a chance to explore our new makerspace with tools and equipment for community use, where you can share ideas, learn practical skills and create.

Monday: 11am–7pm
Tuesday: 11am–7pm
Wednesday: Closed
Thursday: 11am–7pm
Friday: 11am–7pm
Saturday: 9.30am–5pm
Sunday: 9.30am–5pm

Our later weekday opening gives home-educating families time to visit during the week, while offering opportunities to explore the museum after school or work. Weekdays also offer a quieter experience, which may suit adults visiting without children and neurodivergent visitors who prefer a calmer atmosphere.

For a funky evening out, take a wander around our hands-on science and art exhibition, filled with interactive exhibits made from upcycled materials by local artists.

Looking for a cosy and creative evening in good company or just fancy escaping the screens?!! You are also welcome to do some arting in our café area. Bring a sketchbook, craft project or anything else you’re working on. We also have a lovely selection of unusual science, art and sustainability books to curl up with, thanks to Char.

If you are planning to visit just to use the café, best to call or message us first to check that the space is available, as it may occasionally be booked for a school visit, group or event.

Come along and let us know whether the new hours suit you. We’ll review them at the end of the month to see how popular the evening openings have been.

Out and about again with our Magic Mocktail Chemistry Bar!

Thanks to the Royal Society of Chemistry, we’ve been on the road serving up science with a twist. The reactions have been priceless!

Have you spotted Discovering42 on the new maps around the Bodmin Camel Trail yet?

Finding us has always been a bit of an adventure. Our old venue was nestled away in Priory Park where we couldn’t be seen from the road. Now we have moved to a new venue on a road… only the road doesn’t have a name! We may have taken the name Discovering42 a little too literally..

We are now just a stone’s throw from the Camel Trail. Discovering42 makes a great pit stop after a cycle or walk; let your brain get a bit of a workout too! Explore our hands-on science exhibits or grab a little refreshment at our quirky chemistry Magic Mocktail Bar.

As much as we love hearing that Discovering42 is one of Cornwall’s hidden gems, we would quite like to be a little less hidden! We are a growing grassroots science museum and after a hot and rather quiet summer, we could really do with all the support we can get. So please spread the word, bring your friends and family to see our new space.

How to find us: We’re on the road to Sainsbury’s, directly opposite Berrycoombe Road Car Park on Google Maps (not the very similarly named Berrycoombe Car Park by the Camel Trail and Bodmin Jail Attraction!).

It is lovely to be open again, seeing families enjoying the space. It’s been a very challenging few months getting everything sorted, but moments like these make it all feel worth it.

Sometimes we can get lost thinking about what we still want to improve or create, that we don’t see what is already here.

We have had some people leaving heartwarming reviews, which give us a chance to sit down and take in all the good around us plus it really spurs us on with the next stage of the project. Thank you so much to everyone who has been so supportive along the way.
