A Fare Exchange
The Fare Exchange Bodmin has been set during the Covid19 Crisis by a group of volunteers who want to help make change and support the community around them. There are 5 main people involved at present and 4 of the 5 are under 30. It was felt that the ones who are least at risk can help those most at risk in the community.
The first main object we to help with community needs in this time of crisis. With the use of a shop in Bodmin a space has been found to be able to distribute food and essential items to those most in need. The main amount of food has been donated through FareShare South West - FareShare is a national charity and we approached them last year around setting up a hub in Cornwall and this was originally planned for later this year and now brought forward due to the current crisis. Without the help of FareShare this would not be able to happen so good and many people in our community would go without.
As always we look ahead and it is the same here. We look at how we come out of the restrictions and the changes this will bring. Our community lay in an area of deprivation before this crisis and we believe that the other side of Corona will be as bad or worse for many. Bodmin seems to be one of those forgotten towns that seems to be a bypass for tourism, improvements, funding, childrens services etc etc etc.. However, the community here is fantastic and we think stronger in many ways due to the crisis. Many people have stepped forward to offer help, advice and support for many of the more vulnerable in our society.
As we look ahead we look to see the future of the Fare Exchange. We set it up with the idea of the community needing continuation and a little help but also armed with the knowledge that now all want charity but want to help where they can. We are thinking along the lines of trying to become a distribution hub for FareShare where we link with other community groups across Cornwall and become the hub for distribution for them. We also think that we will need to cover our costs in some way for our community needs and this could be possibly done in 2 ways, part funding found through national organisations + a small contribution from those receiving help from the exchange. Think of it almost like a social food project / social food club as in a small fee per week will help you to get a quality parcel of food and essential items that will help sustain a more healthy and beneficial life. Obviously this is months away from happening even if it does happen but it is the kind of direction we are thinking of going in. Community buy in to help with continuation and benefit to the wider community. Let us know any thoughts you may have on this.
