MIKES Trust

MIKES Trust Michael's Initiative for Knifecrime Education in Society Michael was a loving son, an amazing brother and the best uncle.

Michael was a generous man, it was second nature to him to give his time, skills and energy to help others. On April 30th 2023, Michael was stabbed and killed in an incident that saw several other people injured. Michael has left a big hole in many hearts, but his death has ignited a burning desire to act. MIKES Trust has been born with the aim of raising awareness and educating others so that we can help tackle rising knife crime in rural areas like ours.

Watching Henry’s dad standing on those court steps broke our hearts

In many ways, we saw ourselves in him. In many other ways, we didn’t.

The world will never see footage of our Michael dying, and it shouldn’t. The world does not need that horror. More importantly, our family, especially Mike’s nieces and nephew, does not deserve for their to be lives permanently haunted by those final moments being shared publicly.
We had the choice to protect that dignity. Henry Nowak’s family did not.

Instead, they have had to endure the release of devastating footage simply to fight for justice for their son. No family should ever have to carry that burden.

One thing that brings us comfort is knowing that when Mike took his last breaths, he was not alone. He was surrounded by people desperately trying to save him and comfort him.
We know thanks to the tireless effort of those who tried to save him that Mike’s final moments contained compassion, kindness, humanity, and hope. Maybe the last words he heard were: “Hold on, the ambulance is coming. You’ll be alright.”
And even in the horror, those are words of care.

We share the pain of every person who has lost someone they love because of another person's choice to carry a knife and we cannot stop thinking about the pain Henry’s father must live with, knowing his son’s final moments were so different. Our hearts aches for their family and the demons they will now carry every day.

No parent should have to bury their child. No family should have to fight to prove their loved one mattered. And no community should accept knife crime as normal.

Please, let’s keep talking. Let’s keep educating. Let’s keep fighting for change.

An excellent result from Operation Sceptre which ran last week.

Devon and Cornwall Police has arrested eight people and seized a large number of weapons during a dedicated week to combat knife crime.

During the week, of intensification last week, a total of 39 knives were taken off the streets and 27 test purchases were carried out in shops selling knives, with only two outlets failing the test.

Store owners were given advice about selling to under 18s as well as storage and safeguarding information.

Eight arrests were made in relation to knife carrying or knife crime.

25 educational events were also held at local schools and in local communities and an additional 58 retailers were visited to check that they had the appropriate checks in place in relation to selling knives to under 18s.

Detective Inspector Kevin Morley of Devon and Cornwall Police, who led the operation, said, “It’s been a really successful week for us with a lot of positive engagement across the board, including with partners, in schools and with local retailers, as well as a significant number of knives being removed from circulation."

A bit more from the Your Voice in Policing podcast, where Becky sat down with Alison Hernandez, The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall, to discuss the impact of knife crime across our region.

The visit of the Knife Angel to Plymouth was an incredible opportunity to start important conversations. The curiosity, reflection and discussions it inspired were truly powerful, and the impression it left on our communities will stay with us for a long time to come.

There’s a reason why our Becky isn’t in charge of finances and paperwork… she’s not the best at checking the small print! 😅

A couple of years ago, Becky set up a GoFundMe page for the Bodmin Beast Half Marathon, believing the funds would automatically transfer to the MIKES Trust account. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, and this morning, completely without warning, every donation made back then was refunded to the incredibly generous people who supported her challenge.

Just to be clear:
✔️ Becky absolutely completed the challenge
✔️ MIKES Trust is very real and very active
❌ Becky and forms are simply not a great combination!

So, to help recover some of the funds we’ve unexpectedly lost, we’ve now set up an official MIKES Trust GoFundMe page: https://gofund.me/beb9f0cce

Every donation, big or small, will help us continue our work:
💙 Educating young people and communities about the impact of knife crime
💙 Supporting individuals who may be at risk of criminal behaviour
💙 Working alongside organisations to create safer futures

If you’re able to contribute, we would be hugely grateful. Every pound truly makes a difference.

A massive THANK YOU from all of us at MIKES Trust 🙏

We have a busy few weeks ahead as MIKES Trust visits youth groups, primary schools, and secondary schools across Cornwall and Devon.

Through our tailored, age-appropriate sessions, we explore:
🔹 the impact of knife crime on individuals, families, and communities
🔹 myths surrounding knife carrying
🔹 ways young people can stay safe and access support

We are incredibly pleased that our diary is now fully booked until the end of this academic year. However, we are still able to take bookings for youth groups during the summer holidays, and we have availability for schools in the Autumn Term.

If you would like MIKES Trust to visit your setting and deliver a FREE knife crime awareness session, please contact us at:

Today we remember Mike as we approach the moment marking three years since his passing.

We still feel the loss, but we choose to hold onto the good. His smile, the laughter, and all those unforgettable, ridiculous moments. We’re proud of everything that’s been achieved in his name, inspired by his selfless decision to put others before himself. And we remain committed to continuing that work and creating change for the future.

If you’d like to remember Mike with us today, grab a pasty, enjoy it with a smile, raise a Rattler, and make a small promise to do one good thing—however simple—to make the world a little better.

Thank you, as always, for your love and support.

Many of you have followed Wideboy (Mike’s final project car) since his first appearance at BHP in 2023, just weeks after Mike's death.
Progress slowed for a while as we realised none of us quite had the skills to finish the bodywork and paint to the level he deserved (not for lack of trying!).
But today, we’re proud to share that Wideboy is heading to the very best to get him looking incredible - with a little extra Mike thrown in 😲
When he returns, he’ll be reassembled and, one way or another, he will roll into BHP Exeter under his own power.

A huge thank you to everyone who’s helped make this happen — especially Dan Barrett of Thirteen05, who has worked tirelessly from day one to help turn Mike’s dream into reality.

And if you can’t make BHP Fuel Fest to see Wideboy in person, be sure to come along to MIKES Motor Mania 2026, where he’ll be taking centre stage.
