On the evening of Saturday 23rd May the team responded to a report of an overdue hillwalker in the Ben Lawers range.

Alongside colleagues from Police Scotland Tayside MRT and Killin Mountain Rescue Team, as well as the aircrew of R853 from Oban, R851 from Inverness and R226 from Prestwick, the team searched through the night for the missing person.

On Sunday morning the search was joined by further assets from Search & Rescue Dog Association (Scotland), SARDA Southern Scotland, SARAA - Search and Rescue Aerial Association and Royal Air Force Mountain Rescue Service from RAF Valley as well as helicopter R199 from Prestwick.

Sadly at 1:25pm the body of a man was recovered from the munro An Stuc.

Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this sad time.

Over the last 19 days, team member John Owen has cycled the length of the UK from Land’s End to John O’Groats, raising funds for Tayside Mountain Rescue and Médecins Sans Frontières / MSF.

A veteran of 16 years with Tayside MRT, John rolled into John O’Groats today looking fresher than a daisy after nearly three weeks in the saddle.

John has absolutely smashed his fundraising target, raising over £2,000 for both organisations along the way.

A massive well done John — an incredible effort for two brilliant causes. Now go and put your feet up… at least for a day or two!

If you would like to raise funds for Tayside MRT why not join our fundraising walk on September 27th.

Call Out 23/2026

We don’t promote gambling at Tayside MRT, but after seeing an article earlier this week calling Mount Keen the “easiest Munro”, we’d have put decent odds on a weekend callout there.

Shortly before 16:30, Police Scotland tasked the team to assist a walker lost near Mount Keen. With their phone battery fading fast, they did exactly the right thing: dialled 999, asked for Police and Mountain Rescue.

We managed to get a Sarloc Rescue location through to their phone just before the battery died, pinpointing them 2km east of the summit. Team members from Tayside MRT & Police Scotland Tayside MRT found the casualty cold and disorientated, gave them a warm-up, and safely escorted them off the hill.

A gentle reminder: there are no “easy” Munros — only ones that feel easier when you’ve got the right kit and the right skills for the environment that you're in.

Call Out 22/2026

Shortly before 11am this morning the team were requested by Police Scotland to attend an incident at Reekie Linn by Alyth.

Working alongside colleagues from Police Scotland Tayside MRT, Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance - SCAA, Blairgowrie Fire Station and Scottish Ambulance Service, the team packaged and extracted a casualty who had fallen a significant distance down an embankment near the water.

We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

The path by Reekie Linn is loose and steep in places, please take care if walking there as this has been the scene of a number of call outs in recent years.

Tayside MRT is made up of skilled volunteers who are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. We respond in all weather, all terrain and at all hours.

There are around 630,000 sheep in Tayside.

Many are hardy hillgoers, but every so often even they require the assistance of mountain rescue.

This morning we received a request for assistance from Glen Clova Hotel & Luxury Lodges after a sheep in the glen had become stranded on a rock face.

With the situation posing a risk to both the animal and members of the public, we deployed our specialist sheep rescue technician.

In no time at all, “Lucky” — as she has now been named — was back on the ground safe and sound.

Tayside MRT is made up of skilled volunteers who are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. We respond in all weather, in all terrain and at all hours.

A busy day for the team.

What began as our Spring water training at Grandtully had a couple of unexpected twists when the team were called out twice.

Not long after training got underway, the first call out (17/26) came in for a walker who had slipped and injured their ankle at Balthayock Wood near Glen Carse.
Thanks to the support of Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance - SCAA Helimed 76 the incident was quickly resolved and the team were able to return to training on the Tay.

A few hours later, a 2nd call out (18/26) came in. This time the team responded to a walker high on Meall nan Tarmachan who had slipped and suffered a broken ankle. A huge thank you to Coastguard Rescue 199 from Prestwick and Killin Mountain Rescue Team for their invaluable support during the rescue.

We wish both casualties a full and speedy recovery.
