NHS staff keep our health service going — yet the government’s 3.3% pay award doesn’t match the cost of living, and does nothing to fix long-standing issues with pay.

Despite everything, staff remain committed to the NHS — but they need a government that’s committed to them. If ministers want the NHS to recover, they need to start by valuing the people who make it work.

➡️ Join thousands of NHS staff and supporters: Tell the government 3.3% isn’t enough

📢 UNISON Blackpool Health Branch are seeking low paid members to share their experiences with the Low Pay Commission to influence an increase in the National Minimum Wage.

If you are a UNISON member in Blackpool on the minimum wage (£12.21 rising to £12.71 in April) and wish to share your lived experiences, please contact the branch by email: [email protected]

Further information below:

💰 The Low Pay Commission has announced a series of visits over 2026 to gather evidence for its next set of recommendations for increases in the National Minimum Wage.

They are keen to meet around 6 workers working and/or living in and around the Blackpool area over 15-16 April who can talk about the realities of living on the minimum wage, either through a scheduled meeting with commissioners at a local site or a visit to their workplace.

Colleagues from National will be developing a revised version of UNISON’s written evidence to the commission to cover the broad economic issues, but workers’ direct experience of points such as these below will be extremely valuable to press on the commission representatives:

🟣 Experience of life on the minimum wage, difficulties / hardships that workers continue to experience, particularly against the background of sharp rises in the cost of living;

🟣 Injustices of the youth / apprentice rate, examples of people being paid differently for doing exactly the same job because of their age or staff on full NMW being replaced by young workers or apprentices for cost savings;

🟣 Impact on morale, motivation, turnover of staff in the workplace of low pay and improvements, if any, from recent NMW increases, along with absence of any damage to numbers employed following increases to the NMW rate;

🟣 Any examples of employers avoiding the NMW through such tactics as failing to pay for travel time (usually in social care) or the practical difficulties of getting rights to the NMW enforced (eg inability to access clear payment records or fear of retaliation for raising concerns).
