We're incredibly proud to be supporting Mind in Furness with their upcoming community event, Beyond the Label.

Taking place today between 10:00am - 2:00pm at The Bridge, Portland Walk, Barrow-in-Furness, the event will bring people together to raise awareness of Severe Mental Illness (SMI), challenge stigma, and celebrate the power of community support.

It's been a pleasure working alongside the team at Mind in Furness to support this event and our SMI project. Together, we are passionate and committed to creating opportunities for open conversations around mental health, which are helping to make a real difference in our communities.

The countdown is on!

The Spring North Awards are happening on the 13th June and we can’t wait to celebrate with all of our incredible finalists.

One of our finalists this year is Blackburn Rovers Community Trust, nominated in our Innovation category for their inspiring DADS FC project.

Blackburn Rovers Dads FC is a support group for bereaved fathers through baby or child loss, providing a safe space for dads to share their experiences, support one another and focus on improving both mental and physical wellbeing.

As the first programme of its kind linked to a professional football club, Blackburn Rovers Dads FC uses football sessions to bring dads together, helping them rebuild confidence, create friendships and feel supported in a safe and understanding environment

Our creative team recently caught up with the team to hear how excited they are ahead of the awards night and it was incredible to learn more about the project’s impact on the community.

We can’t wait to celebrate all our finalists and shine a spotlight on the organisations making a real difference across Lancashire & South Cumbria.

“I was still convinced I didn’t have cancer because I had no symptoms.”...

People in Lancashire aged 55 to 74 who smoke or used to smoke may be eligible for Lung Cancer Screening.

Invitations are currently being sent to eligible people in Preston. If you haven’t received an invite yet, don’t worry, the service is being rolled out in phases across Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Susan, from Blackpool, was diagnosed with lung cancer through the Lancashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board screening programme in 2022, despite having no symptoms. Because her cancer was found early, she received treatment quickly and is now fully recovered.

Lung cancer is the UK’s third most common cancer and often has no symptoms in its early stages.

Attending screening can give you peace of mind that your lungs are healthy or help detect lung cancer early, when treatment is often more successful.

This week, we received the brilliant news that Spring North has been named as a finalist in the BIBAS Community/Third Sector Business of the Year category.

A really proud moment for the organisation and a huge recognition of the hard work, passion and commitment shown every day by our team, trustees, partners and VCFSE members supporting communities across Lancashire.

What makes this even more special is that it reflects the strength of partnership working and the impact the VCFSE sector continues to have across health, wellbeing and wider community support.

Over the last few years, Spring North has grown significantly as an organisation and it’s fantastic to see the work happening across our network recognised in this way.

We’re looking forward to welcoming the BIBAs judges next month and sharing more about the amazing work taking place across Spring North and with our VCFSE partners. 💜

Last week, someone supported through our severe mental illness (SMI) project attended a GP appointment they never thought they’d be able to face alone. 💜

For many people living with SMI, making the phone call, leaving the house or sitting in a waiting room can feel overwhelming. Fear, anxiety and past experiences can become huge barriers to getting help.

That’s why we support people every step of the way. From arranging appointments to simply being there beside them so they don’t have to face it alone. With that support, this person was able to access both physical and mental health care, which they had been struggling to reach.

They shared:
"I don’t think I would have gone without the support. Having someone there with me made me feel calmer and less alone. It helped me finally get the help I needed.”

People living with SMI face one of the biggest health inequality gaps in England, often because support comes too late. That’s why early intervention matters.

We’re proud to be working alongside Growing Welll, Mind in Furness and SAFA Cumbria to help people feel supported, heard and able to access the care they deserve. 💜
