Hearn Field

Hearn Field The field is freely accessible all year round and is very popular with families and dog walkers.

Hearn Field, Combeinteignhead, is a beautiful, 6.5 acre piece of land on the banks of the River Teign, named after local landowner Percy Hearn who bequeathed it upon his death in 1983 “for the enjoyment of the Parishoners of Haccombe-with-Combe”. It enjoys a well appointed pavilion which has a large reception area, ideal for parties or meetings, in addition to a small kitchen area, a separate bar

area, changing rooms and showers sufficient for two sports teams for cricket or football matches. The management of the field comes under the auspices of Haccombe-with-Combe Parish Council and the maintenance and upkeep of the field is managed by a group of volunteers. If you would be interested in joining, or helping out at any particular event, please feel free to contact us. If you are interested in hiring the Pavilion please see further details here: https://haccombewithcombe.co.uk/hearn-field/

If you're in the vicinity of Hearn Field from tomorrow onwards, you might wonder what's happening to the roadside hedgerow at the Field.

Hedgerows are a beautiful and environmentally important part of our South Devon landscape. However, years of modern flail trimming have degraded their effectiveness and value for wildlife.

The hedge is now being layed in a traditional Devon style. To the untrained eye the initial work is quite startling. First a lot of excess material is removed, and then the remaining stems are almost completely cut through before being bent down to the ground. This invigorates the hedge causing many new shoots to form at intervals along each stem.

The final section of the hedge will be completed next year.

Thank you for taking an interest in hedge-laying at Hearn Field. We hope you notice the hedge becoming thicker and healthier, making it a better barrier and creating more habitat for wildlife. To find out more visit https://devonhedges.org/.

The Devon Hedge Group pulls together organisations and individuals across Devon. Our aim is to further appreciation and understanding of Devon’s hedges, and to provide guidance on their management and conservation…

Thank you so much to all our wonderful volunteers and members of our community who came and supported our bonfire 🔥 and fireworks 🎇 event this evening.

It was so lovely to hear the laughter and shreaks of excitement from the kids (young and old!) and to see everyone enjoying themselves.

And thank you to the weather, for staving off the rain and giving us such a beautiful, still, moon-lit evening

** A Kind Reminder About Respecting Hearn Field **

We love sharing the many positive things that make Hearn Field such a valued and vibrant community space — it’s a place we’re all proud of. But occasionally, we need to speak up when something isn’t right.

Unfortunately, someone chose to sit at one of the pavilion benches today and trim their dog, leaving behind a large amount of fur. This isn’t the first time this has happened.

We understand that some believe dog fur can be useful for birds' nests — but not in this quantity, and not in a shared space used by everyone!

If you're the person doing this, we ask you to reflect on why you feel it's okay to leave this mess in a public area. Would you do this while the Woodshed coffee bar is open, with others around to witness it? Would you leave this in your own garden? Or would you tidy up after yourself?

Hearn Field is everyone’s garden — a space for all of us to enjoy, care for, and respect. Leaving dog fur behind is not just inconsiderate; it places the burden on others to clean up after you.

If you’re reading this and it was you, please don’t do it again. And if you know who is doing this, we’d appreciate you having a quiet (or not-so-quiet) word. Thank you.

Let’s all help keep Hearn Field the beautiful, welcoming space we know and love.
