The Meon Valley Locomotive Society (MVLS) was set up in 1971 by a group of local railway enthusiasts interested in standard gauge railways. Following the closure of the Meon Valley Line, the society aimed to save Wickham Station preserving a locomotive and keeping it there whilst using the station building as a possible meeting venue. Unfortunately British Rail demolished the station before the plans came to fruition. The MVLS then developed into and continues to flourish as a general interest railway society.
