This week at CoderDojo we’ve making good use of our new (to us!) laptops, which have been kindly donated by local business Bladeroom Data Centres (BRG Technologies).

These laptops will provide kids with the opportunity to try out all sorts of coding and tech projects. Just this week we’ve been:
1) Coding micro:bits to play rock, paper scissors
2) Making a Scratch game featuring an evil squirrel
3) Using the new face detection features of Scratch
4) Coding Lego mindstorms robots (this worked a lot better cut the ends of the session!)

We’re very grateful to Bladeroom for the donation, thank you all!

 We’re back in Bishops Cleeve Library this coming Saturday, and we’d love to see you there.

Hi all, we are looking for extra volunteers to help out with CoderDojo, our free coding club for kids ages 7-14 at the Bishops Cleeve Library.

We’re looking for people to assist during the sessions, helping the children work on their projects.

No technology experience is necessary, it’s more about helping the children figure things out for themselves. Most of the current volunteers come from a tech background, so we can cover that side of things!

We mainly use Scratch and Lego Mindstorms, but also sometimes do some web and Python projects.

If you’re interested in joining us, we’d like to invite you along to our final session of the year on the Sat 5th July to find out more about the club and what’s involved in volunteering. Please drop me a dm or email if you’d like to come along: [email protected]

Today at CoderDojo we run the based escape room challenge. The kids had to solve a series of puzzles to get their spaceship back into the sky, each one showing off the features of the micro:bit.

I’ve spoken to a few of you at the club about Coolest Projects. This is a chance for the kids to share the projects they’ve been working on with the world. You can enter anything, it doesn’t need to be complicated, or even completely finished. There are two parts to the event - a worldwide online showcase open to all and in-person events in some countries, including the UK.

The Coolest Projects online showcase is open to any young person up to age 18, anywhere in the world! Creators can share digital tech creations with the world in our online gallery, join a celebration livestream and receive certificates and fun digital swag, all for free. If you’d like to upload your project, go to coolestprojects.org to find the form, and use group code 208040 to link the submission to our club.

There is an also a free in-person event for young tech creators in the UK, being held on Saturday 17 May 2025 in Bradford. Participants can share their projects with family, friends, and their coding community, get fun swag and certificates to celebrate their achievements, and try hands-on coding activities at the event. There is a separate entry form for this event, so you will need to fill this in even if you’ve already entered the online showcase.

CoderDojo was fully booked at the library today. It was great to see so many kids exploring coding with Scratch, lego and the micro:bits!

We went last Saturday. Along with the usual lego creations (Sumo wrestlers this time!) we also had Ben working on a text based adventure game in Python. Unfortunately I didn’t manage to get any photos, so you’ll have to make do with this AI generated image!
