You may have seen posts circulating online claiming the Government is telling people to stock up on three days' worth of emergency supplies. We've looked into it, and there is an official announcement behind the claims.
On 22 October, the Government launched its new Be Ready campaign, encouraging households across the UK to prepare for up to 72 hours (three days) of disruption to everyday services.
๐ But before anyone panics, this is about being prepared โ not panic buying.
The guidance is designed to help households cope if an emergency temporarily disrupts things many of us rely on every day, including electricity, water, internet access and mobile phone services.
Possible scenarios include severe weather, flooding, power cuts and cyber incidents.
๐ So what is the Government recommending?
The official guidance suggests considering the following essentials:
๐ง Bottled drinking water โ around 3 litres per person per day, with extra for cooking and washing.
๐ฅซ Non-perishable food that will last three days, ideally food you would normally eat and that doesn't need cooking.
๐ฆ A torch and spare batteries.
๐ป A battery-powered or wind-up FM radio to receive updates if other communication services are disrupted.
๐ A charged power bank for your mobile phone.
๐งฅ Blankets, sleeping bags and warm clothing.
๐ฉน A first-aid kit and essential medicines.
๐ท Some cash, in case card payments or cash machines are unavailable.
๐ Copies of important documents, written emergency contact numbers and details of regular medication.
๐งผ Hygiene essentials, including hand sanitiser and wet wipes.
๐ถ If you have young children, remember baby formula, nappies and wipes. Pet owners should also consider extra food and water for their animals.
โ Does this mean an emergency is imminent?
No. The announcement is about improving the country's preparedness for possible emergencies. It is not an announcement that a specific disaster is about to happen.
The idea is that households can manage for a short period while emergency services and other support are prioritised for those who need help most.
๐ท Do you need to spend a fortune preparing?
Absolutely not. The Government specifically advises people to check what they already have, plan for their household's needs and gradually pick up any missing essentials during their normal shopping trips.
There is no need to empty supermarket shelves or buy expensive survival equipment.
The campaign also encourages people to look out for neighbours and check whether anyone in their household could need additional support during an emergency.

It's sensible to be prepared, but there's no need to panic. A few simple steps taken over time can make a real difference if everyday services are temporarily disrupted.
