Stockton & Darlington Railway Youth Team Stockton & Darlington Railway Youth Team (SDRYT) is open to young people aged 10-16 Members benefit from free train travel courtesy of Northern Trains.

About us

Firstly, let's bust the myth, the SDRYT is not a group just for rail enthusiasts, we are a community youth group based on the railway where the focus is on providing training and work experience to assist members with future employment goals - and is open to everyone aged 10 to 16! An interest in the railway or trains is not required and whilst members do learn about the railway industry

as part of their training, the skills and experience that members gain can be transferred to many other jobs and employment sectors.

Established in 2007 the SDRYT consists of young people aged from 10 to 16* and membership is open to young people from the local community and further afield. Work experience, volunteering and training is available at a network of railway organisations within the North-East, including Bishop Trains in Bishop Auckland, Weardale Railway, Excursions by Rail, Northern Trains station adoption scheme (Bishop Auckland & North Road stations), Bishop Auckland Remembrance Garden and Northern Trains Bishop Line station support group. Youth Team members are regularly on duty at Bishop Auckland station helping passengers, selling tickets and keeping the station clean and tidy but we also work within the community, supporting local initiatives and attending local events. The SDRYT owns a railway carriage at Stanhope station which is home to the team's model railway display and is opened by members to the public during the summer. In addition to training and work experience opportunities the group regularly go on day trips and take part in special events. Membership is free and a great way to make new friends and do something different. The experience available looks great on a CV and can help with future job applications.

LNER / S&DR200 EVENT
Celebrating 200 Years of the Stockton & Darlington Railway
This morning, shortly after midnight, members of the Railway Youth Team attended Darlington Railway Station as guests of LNER, to witness an historic event - the replica Locomotion No 1 passing through the station on it's journey from Shildon to Stockton, and pausing alongside a modern LNER Azuma train - an event that will never be seen again.

On 27th September 1825, history was made. Locomotion No.1 set off from Shildon to Stockton and changed the world forever — the birth of the modern passenger railway.
This was more than just a local achievement. It was the start of a transport revolution that spread across Britain and the globe, carrying not just coal and goods, but people, ideas and opportunities. This area, was, and still is, at the heart of that story.
The Youth Team would like to thank LNER for inviting the group to this historic event.

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING
A massive well done to the Stockton & Darlington Railway Youth Team who held their first Macmillan Coffee Morning at Bishop Auckland station yesterday, supporting Macmillan Cancer Support, the group raised £247 for this fantastic charity.

THANK YOU!

A huge thank you to everyone that supported the Youth Team raffle on-board the Excursions by Rail excursion train from Stanhope to Edinburgh on Saturday.

The total amount raised (which includes various other direct donations on the day), was a massive £1,000.

The funds will help us purchase uniform and equipment and help out with costs for leisure and educational activities for the group.
