North Pennines National Landscape

North Pennines National Landscape Taking action for nature and people in the North Pennines National Landscape & UNESCO Global Geopark

The North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is a stunning landscape of open heather moors, dramatic dales, tumbling upland rivers, wonderful woods, close-knit communities, glorious waterfalls, fantastic birds, colourful hay meadows, stone-built villages, intriguing imprints of a mining and industrial past, distinctive plants and much, much more. As well as being an AONB the North

Pennines is also a UNESCO Global Geopark. The North Pennines is a distinctive landscape of high moorland and broad upland dales in the North of England. It shares a boundary with the Yorkshire Dales National Park in the south and extends as far as the Tyne Valley, just south of Hadrian's Wall, in the north. Parts of the North Pennines are in the three English counties of Cumbria, Durham and Northumberland. The North Pennines was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) by the UK Government in 1988. It is the second largest of the 40 AONBs in England and Wales, covering an area of 1983km2.

It's wonderful to see one of the North Pennines National Landscape and UNESCO Global Geopark most iconic views featured on Royal Mail stamps.

High Force, England’s biggest waterfall, spectacularly drops 70 feet (21m) into a plunge pool below and is one of the 10 waterfalls featured in the stamp set.

Why not visit this stunning waterfall and see how it compares with the stamp?

In , volunteer with us to remove invasive garden lady’s-mantle (Alchemilla mollis) from an area around an Upper Teesdale beck.

This area of the is especially important for the population of rare native plants that are found there. If left to set seed, the garden lady’s-mantle poses a risk of spreading, and possibly out competing and replacing the important native plant communities.

There are two volunteer opportunities on 21 and 30 July, 10am to 3.30pm. These will be practical days requiring a good level of fitness as well as the ability to navigate uneven terrain. Find out more and sign-up: bit.ly/NorthPennremoveinvasiveplant

As part of a stonemason's apprenticeship with Heritage Consolidation Ltd, Spencer is learning a wide range of new skills whilst working on site with experienced professionals.

The apprenticeship is funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery players, and Historic England through the Land of Lead and Silver project, which is led by the North Pennines National Landscape team. The techniques that Spencer is learning have been used for centuries, and the work will help historic buildings stand the test of time.

Mining was a big deal in the for hundreds of years, particularly for lead and later for fluorspar. It has had a big impact on the history and the landscape.

Some of the best places to see it are at Nenthead Mines, Allenheads, West Rigg Opencut and Shildon Engine House.

During North Pennines NatureFest 2026, artist Carole McCourt led a guided walk around Allenheads, inviting people to slow down, look closely and find the stories held in the ground beneath our feet.

As the group strolled, they looked for minerals, discovered lead-tolerant plants, visited heritage buildings, and enjoyed a hilly meadow bursting with wild mountain pansies.

It was a morning rooted in lead, and full of creative looking, shared discovery, and conversation.

Part of the Land of Lead and Silver project, led by the North Pennines National Landscape team and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players, and Historic England.
