As part of our work to highlight the voices and stories of Black Carers throughout the month of October, our partners OSCAR Birmingham share the innspirational words of one Carer supporting a family member with Sickle Cell.

Forward Carers is delighted to announce an opportunity to apply for grants to support a Birmingham based Carer activity this November. ❤️🕺

Being an unpaid Carer can be rewarding, but it can also be complex, demanding, and overwhelming.

That is why it is so important that support is designed around the real experiences of Carers themselves.

Any group of Carers over the age of 17 can apply for up to £500 for an activity, with application deadlines closing on 16th October.

We are keen for the activity to take place in November 2026 to honour and celebrate the month of Carers Rights Day (preferably during the week 16th - 20th).

We’re incredibly proud that Forward Carers – Birmingham Carers Hub, has been named a Finalist for Social Enterprise of the Year at the Birmingham Awards 2026.

For more than a decade, Birmingham Carers Hub has supported unpaid Carers across the city with information, advice, Carer Assessments and practical and wellbeing support.

This recognition is a celebration of the difference it makes every day and, above all, of Birmingham’s unpaid Carers and the extraordinary contribution they make to our community.

Public voting for the award is open and we'd hugely appreciate your support.

For some people with dementia, their landline can be a lifeline.

So if you’re living with dementia or supporting someone who is, it’s important to be prepared for the digital switchover that’s happening in January 2027.

In January, landlines across the UK are moving from traditional phone lines to digital services that work through a broadband connection.

Save our checklist for what you need to do before the switch to make sure your home phone and certain telecare devices continue to work smoothly.

Come along to connect with others, hear stories and voices from Black Carers, and access culturally relevant support and wellbeing information.

African and Caribbean-inspired light refreshments will be available, as will our Forward Carers team to support with guidance and signposting where necessary.
