Our purpose is to look after patients, their families, and staff across our hospitals by providing the added extras that are over and above what the NHS can fund - from state-of-the-art equipment and ground-breaking research to tranquil and reflective garden s

paces, activities and toys to help patients’ and their family’s well-being. We help patients of all ages - from the tiniest premature babies, who need life-saving care so that they can thrive, to our older patients who need activities and programmes to help their physical and mental well-being while in hospital. Meet one of our newest volunteers, Gurmal. 💙

You'll see him if you stop by the Charity Hub at Queen Elizabeth Hospital giving out information about the charity, and helping people find information about our events and fundraising.

Volunteers like Gurmal make a huge difference to the charity, and are an important part of the team, his decision to support the hospital charity is an incredibly kind one, that inspires everyone he meets. 🫶

Gurmal said: "In 2013 a visit to my GP was a shock, I was urgently referred to hospital. After several tests and a wide range of medical treatment, monitoring over several years I got the diagnosis of a rare disease, Sub Acute Cerebellar Syndrome.

"A Big thank you to the Neurologist Department who supported me through a very difficult time, as well as the neuro physio clinic who are set up for patients like me with specialist nurses.

"I set high goals. First to do a charity 10m walk, I raised £1,000. But my massive goal throughout was to give back my time and become a volunteer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Charity. I am going to continue to high set goals for the future, taking on fundraising challenges with determination, commitment and love. I've just reached the starting line."

On we want to celebrate all the amazing donor families who have made a huge difference in other families' lives. 🫶

The British Transplant Games over the weekend highlighted how those families making tough choices helped to give new life into other families, allowing them to not only gain their lives back, but live a healthier life.

After many years living a strong and healthy lifestyle, in 2021, Tia's life was turned upside down when she suffered multiple cardiac arrests and was placed on the urgent heart transplant list.

After spending over 5 months on a ward, away from her family, including her 6-month-old son, Tia finally heard the news she'd been dreaming of - a viable heart had been found. Thanks to the exceptional care she received at the QE, Tia is now strong and healthy and more determined than ever to make the most of the gift given to her by her donor.

🏥 The Edmonds Transplant Centre, which officially opened at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham last year, has transformed the treatment and recovery journey for transplant patients across the Midlands and beyond. It is a national centre of excellence for organ transplantation, putting patient care at the forefront of transplantation.

❤️‍🩹Clinical Care Consultant, Nick Murphy, who was behind the idea of the Centre, said, “Patients can come in and see their physician, the surgeon, the transplant coordinators, their psychologist and their dietician all on the same day, and in one location. This takes away a huge amount of stress for patients and therefore speeds up their recovery time.”

A big round of applause for the Healthcare for Older People team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, who took on a Tough Mudder earlier this year to fundraise. 🙌

The money they raise will help us provide support and home comforts to older patients during hospitals stays at the hospital. 💙

About the event, Clare said: "Tough Mudder was AMAZING!! We ended up as a small but genuinely mighty team of five, and I am incredibly proud of the teamwork, grit and resilience everyone showed throughout the course. The support, camaraderie and laughter from fellow participants was really something special. We had such a brilliant time that we are planning to take a team to Manchester on 10 October 2026, before returning to Belvoir Castle next July!"

The charity funds a range of projects and equipment to help older people while they are ion hospital, from seemingly simple things, like radios and puzzle books, to specialist activities for people with dementia, and ward renovations to make spaces more comfortable. 🫶

Building resilience and confidence with rehabilitation. Diving with the Injured helps injured military personnel on their journey to recovery through scuba diving.

By teaching a new skill in the water, participants gain their confidence back after life-changing medical diagnoses from PTSD and spinal injuries to burns, limb loss, and brain injury.

In the water injuries like limb loss or spinal damage affect movement less, and on the annual Diving with the Injured overseas trips, there is no staring, no sympathy, just banter.
