Centuries before modern finance had a word for it, Sultan Orhan Ghazi was creating a way to fund Bursa's mosques, schools and soup kitchens without relying on the state treasury.

The answer was Cumalıkızık: a village whose farmland and local trade generated a steady income, year after year, helping to keep these institutions running: paying scholars, feeding the poor, maintaining the buildings people relied on.

Today, UNESCO still recognizes its place in this history. Not simply as an act of charity, but as a system designed to last beyond the people who created it.

That is the idea behind Waqf, protect the source, use what it produces for good and let that good continue. The people who built Cumalıkızık are gone but what they built is still giving.
