Today, Kings Heath Community Kitchen celebrated its first birthday — one year of changing lives, building friendships and bringing our community together.

And what a way to mark it…

When we opened one year ago, we welcomed 18 people. Today, we welcomed 109. ❤️

But this has never been about numbers. It’s about warm meals, meaningful conversations, laughter, friendship and belonging. It’s about people arriving alone and leaving knowing somebody cares.

To every volunteer who has given their time, energy and love over the past year — YOU ARE THE HEART OF THIS KITCHEN. ❤️

To everyone who has donated, supported, partnered with us or shared our story — thank you for believing in what we’re building.

And to everyone who has walked through our doors — YOU ARE THE REASON WE DO THIS.

We began with a simple belief: nobody in our community should feel forgotten, judged or alone. One year on, that belief is stronger than ever.

Our first birthday may be over, but we’re only just getting started. 💪

Here’s to another year of full plates, open doors, second chances and changing lives.

ONE YEAR DOWN. COUNTLESS LIVES STILL TO TOUCH. 💛

This Sunday, the 11th of October, Kings Heath Community Kitchen turns ONE!

And we're throwing a birthday celebration.

There will be be soup, chickpea and vegetable curry with rice, birthday cake, plenty of tea and coffee, and most importantly, a room full of people who care about each other.

Thank you to H Mall Birmingham - Shop.Eat.Play & Loco Lounge for the amazing donations of food for this weekends celebration and thank you to LoveBrum for all of their amazing support this year!

This weekend is a really special one for us as we celebrate Kings Heath Community Kitchen’s 1st Birthday!

For the past year, our doors have opened to bring people together around food, friendship, practical support and community — and this Sunday we’d love you to come and celebrate with us.

I’m incredibly proud to share that I’ve been nominated and selected as a finalist for Community Champion of the Year at the Birmingham Awards!

To even be nominated means so much. To now be named a finalist is something I’m genuinely proud of — but this recognition goes far beyond one person.

When Jo and I started Kings Heath Community Kitchen, the aim was simple: create a place where people could walk through the door and feel welcomed, supported and valued.

Since then, that simple idea has grown into something bigger than we could have imagined — thousands of meals served, people supported into housing, clothing and essentials provided, weekly support sessions established, partnerships built and thousands of volunteer hours given back to our community.

None of that happens because of one person.

It happens because of our incredible volunteers, supporters, partner organisations, donors and every single person who has believed in what we are building at KHCK.

So while my name might be on the nomination, I see this as recognition for the whole team and for the community we serve.

From where this journey started to standing as a finalist for Community Champion of the Year… it’s a moment I won’t forget.

Whatever happens on the night, I’m proud of how far we’ve come — and we’re only getting started.

But Community Kitchen is about so much more than the food.

Every Wednesday, Kings Heath Community Kitchen opens its doors to anyone who needs support, advice, connection — or simply somewhere safe to sit and talk.
Our Wednesday Sessions are about looking at the whole person, not just one problem.
Someone might walk through our doors needing help with housing, but there could also be issues with benefits, debt, employment, wellbeing or simply feeling isolated.
That’s why we’re building a wrap-around service where people can access different types of support in one welcoming, judgement-free place.

Housing & homelessness support
Benefits, welfare & debt guidance
Employment, education & skills support
Wellbeing and recovery support
One-to-one practical help
Signposting to specialist organisations
A safe place to connect and be heard
And sometimes, the most important thing we can offer is simply time, dignity and somebody who will listen.
No complicated barriers.
No judgement.
No expectation that you have everything figured out before you walk through the door.
Just community and support when you need it.

This week we’re also welcoming BHX Housing, who’ll be offering housing advice, guidance and practical support.

Our Wednesday Sessions are about making support easier to access and helping people before problems reach crisis point.
☕ A warm welcome – free tea and coffee in a safe, friendly and non-judgemental environment.
🤝 One-to-one support – sit down privately with our team, tell us what's happening and we'll listen and help where we can.
🏠 Practical advice & guidance – support around housing and homelessness, benefits, debt, employment and other challenges you may be facing.
❤️ Health & wellbeing – a space to talk and support with finding appropriate health, mental wellbeing and community services.
➡️ Signposting & referrals – we work to connect people with organisations and services that can provide specialist or ongoing help.
👥 Community & connection – you don't have to come because you're in crisis. You're equally welcome to come in for a coffee, a conversation and some company.

You don't need to be homeless.
You don't need to already be working with another service.
You don't need to know exactly what help you need.
Just come through the door and talk to us.
There is no referral, no appointment and no judgement. Everyone is welcome. 🧡
