The OHMI Trust

The OHMI Trust The OHMI Trust is a UK based charity set up to remove the barriers faced by those with upper limb disabilities in actively participating in music making.

The OHMI Trust's objective is to remove the barriers to music-making faced by the physically disabled. Currently orchestral instrument that can be played without two fully functioning hands and arms are rare. This denies unlimited participation in musical life to those with congenital disabilities and amputees, as well as the millions who may have been injured, suffered a stroke or developed arthritis. The primary obstacle is the absence of suitable instruments.

15 for 15! If you’re taking part in a concert or ensemble performance before the 20th of May 2027, we'd be super grateful if you were to consider using the opportunity to support OHMI – whether that’s donating a percentage of your proceeds, holding a raffle or through other creative means!

In return, we’ll support you in promoting your event through our social channels and quarterly newsletter. Where we’re unable to attend and support you in person, we will send promotional material to introduce OHMI’s work to your audience.

Have you have any disability access issues to playing the organ? We would love to hear what they were and any solutions you found. We have been contacted by someone who is redoing an organ and wants to make it as accessible as possible. Please share all your experiences/ideas!

Curious about what inclusive music-making looks like on the ground?

Our General Manager Rachel Wolffsohn was invited recently to speak with Esi Hardy of Celebrating Diversity on her Equality Edit podcast.

This in-depth discussion, entitled ‘Inclusive Music And the Barriers We Forget’, is broken down into helpful chapter headings:

• It’s All Right To Try
• Why Music Accessibility Still Falls Behind
• When Instrument Design Creates Barriers
• The Difference Between Crisis Support And Everyday Inclusion
• When Accessibility Depends On Parent Capacity
• What Happens When Schools Do Not Know Where To Start
• Making Music Lessons More Accessible In Practice
• Challenging Assumptions About Disabled Potential
• Schools, Equality Duties And Inclusive Provision
• Why Inclusion Is More Than Giving Somebody A Different Activity
• How Accessibility Benefits The Whole Classroom
• Listening To Disabled Children And Parents
• Moving From “Difficult Behaviour” To Barrier Reduction
• Practical Advice For Teachers And Education Leaders
• Creating More Inclusive Pathways Into Music

You can listen in here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL8XjUUVkSI

Please do like or share because the wider the conversation, the easier it will be, once and for all, to tackle the exclusion disabled people often face in music-making!

Just done our annual stock check at Wigwam Storage. It’s amazing how things shift around during the year and always good to get it tidied up and straight ready for sending out to new users in the current year. Thank you so much for your support of our work Wigwam Storage. It makes all the difference having somewhere safe to store it.

🎉🎶 OHMI has successfully applied for Arts Council England grant funding to deliver Whole Class music lessons for 2026–27 🎉🎶

It means we can introduce the OHMI Music-Makers Whole Class programme to schools in three new areas via the Derby & Derbyshire Music Service, Entrust Music Staffordshire, and HOUNSLOW MUSIC SERVICE. Plus continue provision in the five areas where we are already working with Music and Arts Service, Lincolnshire Music Service, Inspiring Music in Central Bedfordshire, Resonate Music in Liverpool, and Southampton and the Isle of Wight Music Service.

The funding will also allow us to switch the production of one-handed flutes to the UK.

🎻We’re delighted that music education charity The Benedetti Foundation has chosen OHMI to feature in its series of Spotlight Sessions which aims to promote inspiring work across music and beyond.

For our work to be recognised by a charity founded by the internationally acclaimed and super talented violinist Nicola Benedetti means a lot! It’s also a perfect fit as it so happens that our violin bow holders are amongst the most popular enabling equipment in the OHMI Shop …

Thank you The Benedetti Foundation for the opportunity ❤️
