World Mental Health Day is tomorrow! An old Facebook memory popped up of me during lockdown 🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s lovely to see people getting back out and joining activities in their local areas again! Please remember to look after your own mental health while supporting and helping others too ❤️

I’m easing back into walking and BodyPump after being poorly, and taking it gently so I don’t overdo it. I’ve also started eating a handful of mixed nuts each day, and I’ve been feeling good, why not give them a try if you don’t already?

Happy international Day of Older People!

Adult Social Care Birmingham City Council Prevention Brum, Birmingham City Council's Public Health Team Healthy Brum and BVSC are proud to be joining the UK Network of Age-friendly Communities in celebrating the International Day of Older People (IDOP) and the start of Birmingham's Ageing Well Month. Every year, on October 1, people from across the world come together to mark the United Nations International Day of Older People.

This year’s UK theme is 'What’s on your doorstep?'. Older people make huge contributions to our communities as workers, volunteers and carers. But when what’s on our doorstep is limited, these contributions can be harder to make. This IDOP, we want to celebrate those contributions while helping to highlight, and ultimately tackle, any barriers that stops older people exploring what's on their doorstep.

Every day, not just on this International Day, the Neighbourhood Network Schemes have a focus on older people. They work closely with all the community, voluntary, faith and social enterprises in each area that provide and host activities and suport for over 50s from coffee and lunches to seated yoga, wellbeing sessions, gardening and men's groups to welfare benefits support and so much more. The NNS teams share what they do, provide support and training and even some grant funding to meet priorities. The list of all the free and low cost activities they find out about are on the Community Directory on Connect to Support - you can search on postcode or a key word. A good way to find out "What's on your doorstep?"

During Ageing Well Month there's lots of activites to try out as well across the city.

💛 Today I had the pleasure of visiting OPNOCS (Older Peoples New Opportunities Consortium), a fantastic group that is all about building friendships, reducing loneliness, and helping people stay connected through regular coffee mornings, seated yoga, trips, and other social activities 💛

The room was packed with around 80 people today, all enjoying lunch, entertainment from a singer, and most importantly, each other's company. It was wonderful to see people up on the dance floor, smiling, laughing, and having such a great time.

A huge shoutout to Tony and the team, who do an incredible job creating such a welcoming and supportive community. What touched me most was listening to people sharing their stories with Rita and me about what OPNOCS means to them. People spoke about finding friendship after bereavement, having a reason to get up in the morning, and having something positive to look forward to each week.

These are the moments that remind us why community matters so much. 💛
