Glasgow City Council's threat of 'fire & re-hire' will cause avoidable damage to staff trust, livelihoods, and functionality of statutory services if it goes ahead.

It is imperative that a way forward is found. If negotiations can’t resume and resolve the differences quickly, the Scottish Government should take an active role in resolving the dispute.

Ultimately, this situation reinforces why Social Workers so urgently need their own terms and conditions, which is what we will continue vigorously campaigning for.

On Friday, SASW and SWU issued a firm statement condemning proposals by Glasgow City Council to implement a 'fire and re-hire' policy that would have affected thousands of workers across the city.

We're glad that over the weekend these plans have since been paused and negotiations between the Council and Unions are resuming this week to try to reach a new deal on pay.

📰 BASW and SWU warn that pay cuts for social work managers in Glasgow will do significant damage to services across children.

We raised the alarm on this matter in The Scotsman last week and have written to the Scottish Government to push back on the proposals. It is deeply irresponsible to risk destabilising social work at a time of such intense pressure on services.

SWU is proud to be at the TUC today as invited guests, standing alongside the wider trade union movement.

The trade union movement is incredibly important for social workers standing up for better working conditions; we are stronger together.

In the UK we are facing rising inequality, attacks on equality and inclusion, and increasing pressures on the communities we support. The trade union movement has a vital role to play in defending dignity, fairness, and social justice.

These challenges demand collective action, and that is exactly what trade unions provide.
