Meet Mavis, one of our incredible food pantry volunteers! 💚

Mavis has been volunteering with us for around 12 months!

Mavis was inspired to start volunteering with us after seeing how busy the pantry was in the mornings and wanting to help out.

A typical volunteering day for Mavis looks like: “I help out at the pantry by greeting people in the morning. I sit outside and give everyone numbers so they don’t have to queue and hang around. It means they can go off and do other things and come back.”

Thank you, Mavis! We truly appreciate all of your help on pantry mornings. 💚

Daniel is one of our amazing food bank and pantry volunteers and has been with us for a couple of months! 💚

Daniel shares that he was inspired to start volunteering as "when I came to Birmingham, I was homeless. I volunteered to help people and give back to the community."

A typical day volunteering for Daniel includes meeting and greeting people and having conversations with them. Making up food parcels and checking dates on food. Preparing refreshments, tidying the kitchen area, and helping people with their shopping.

We're delighted to introduce Lily Hale, who has joined Digital NNS as our new Project Coordinator.

Lily brings a background in psychology, marketing and digital communications, alongside experience in customer-facing roles where she has developed strong communication, organisation and relationship-building skills.

She is passionate about community engagement, digital confidence and helping people stay connected in an increasingly digital world. Through her volunteering experience supporting people with a range of additional needs, Lily has seen first-hand the importance of empathy, inclusion and collaboration.

We're thrilled to have Lily on board as we continue working with Birmingham's Neighbourhood Network Schemes, community organisations and partners to help more people access the skills, support and confidence they need to thrive online.

Meet Esther, one of our amazing food pantry and foodbank volunteers! 💚

Esther has been volunteering with us around 4 - 5 years!

Esther shared that she was inspired to start volunteering after retiring, when she had more time available, and wanting to feel useful.

A typical day for Esther looks like this: "Fun and social, I love the pantry. I really enjoy getting to know people, learning what they like to eat, and helping with ideas for food and veg. I fetch water from downstairs (a good way to get some steps in!), and help take food up and down to the foodbank. I meet and greet people, make drinks, and have a chat. It’s such a lovely way to connect. It always leaves me with a really warm feeling."

Meet Heather, one our incredible pantry volunteers! 💚

Heather has been volunteering with us for over 2 years!

She stated she was inspired to volunteer, saying, “having recently retired, I had more time & I wanted to do something positive within the local community.”

A typical day of volunteering involves “my volunteering with the food pantry is for 2 hours a week and generally involves welcoming and assisting customers with their shop, stocktaking to create next week's shopping list, occasionally making hot drinks, collecting food bank parcels from the store room. Staff & volunteers are friendly and thoughtful, making it an enjoyable time.”
