Susan Philipsz' Station Clock is an artwork for the future celebrating the many voices of Birmingham. The Birmingham Big Art Project believes that art is a vital part of our city’s past, present and future. We believe that Birmingham needs to invest in permanent and temporary public art works that animate the city in unexpected and memorable ways. Our city is a vibrant and diverse metropolis and w
e believe this Art Project will empower citizens and positively engage the local community. The objective of the Birmingham Big Art Project is to:
1. Deliver an iconic work of art for the City of Birmingham in the next 5 years that is high quality, innovative, permanent, low in maintenance
2. Celebrate the culture and heritage of Birmingham for residents, tourists and future generations
3. Attain international recognition and place the city of Birmingham on the world’s cultural map
4. Add value to Birmingham’s cultural offer and enhance the city’s reputation
Anticipated cost - £2 million
Timeline:
1. June 2015 – Announcement of list of artists/ Official start of the competition
2. January 2016 – Announcement of a final shortlist of 5 artists
3. May 2016 – Completion of 5 maquettes and start of public consultation in the new city library
4. January 2017 – Selection of outright winner and process of obtaining planning consent
5. 2018 – 2025 Production + Installation
6. 2026 - launch of artwork
