Hear a sculpture come alive!

📍 Ikon Gallery, Birmingham
🕟 Saturday 18 June at 2.30pm
🎫 Free entry with no need to book — just drop in!

Join BCMG pianist John Reid at Ikon Gallery for a 30‑minute performance on Angela de la Cruz’s extraordinary Upright Piano.

Created in 1999, Upright Piano is a re‑made instrument: de la Cruz joined and re‑strung a whole piano with the bottom part of another so it can only be played at standing height. Restored for this exhibition, it offers a rare chance to encounter the artwork not only as sculpture, but as a functioning, reimagined instrument.

John Reid performs music by Kurtág, Haydn and C.P.E. Bach, along with Neill Quinton's piece 'Upright', composed especially for this instrument.

A wonderful afternoon at Winterbourne House and Garden on Sunday, as our BCMG Young Composers shared the music they have composed this term.

Inspired by Winterbourne's surroundings and the music of Katherine Balch, the group created a series of original compositions which were performed throughout the gardens by BCMG violinists Colette Overdijk and Charlotte Skinner.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and congratulations to our young composers for a brilliant final performance.
