🚨Help wildlife in hot weather!🚨 With temperatures set to soar again, pease take care of yourselves in this hot weather, and lend a helping hand to wildlife too. If you can, leave out a bowl of shallow water, scatter some food, top up your ponds and bird baths, and provide areas of shade for animals to shelter. Our wonderful wildlife will thank you, and we do too!

Thanks to all who joined us for a marvellous morning at Moseley Bog, talking fens, flowers and folklore! It was brilliant to introduce so many people to everything from wild orchids to pineapple w**d, discussing the myths, mysticism and medicinal uses which surround them. We eventually managed to let people go home - our Conservation Manager, Jake, could have talked long into the afternoon because there is just so much wonderful wildlife to see and talk about!

This event was free for members as part of our new monthly schedule of Member Events. If you'd like to support our work for wildlife and get free access to future events, why not consider joining us: bbcwildlife.org.uk/JoinUs

On Wednesday evening we were delighted to bring together stakeholders, supporters, friends, trustees and colleagues for 'Showcasing our Impact, Seeding our Future', an event designed to spotlight some of our recent successes whilst casting an eye to a future in which we can work together for a wilder Birmingham, Black Country and beyond.

Our CEO, Dr. Delia Garratt, highlighted the positive impact of partnership projects such as Purple Horizons, the conservation work of Dudley's Path to Nature Recovery and importance of connecting people to nature through Youth Action For Nature. Our Deputy CEO, Dan Brown, then looked ahead to our ambitious new landscape-scale nature recovery projects such as Wild Walsall, which aims to improve 1.5% of the total borough of Walsall for nature.

We were thrilled to welcome Jamie Morgan of Wimbledon to speak about Championing Nature, a 6-year project funded by Wimbledon and Emirates which is allowing us to carry out a significant calendar of community engagement events whilst enabling a transformative redesign of our Centre of the Earth environmental education centre in Winson Green.

Our vision is a wilder Birmingham and Black Country with more green and wild spaces where nature thrives, and where everyone has an equal opportunity to access nature in their daily lives. We want every child to have a wilder future, and every community to have nature at its heart.

It is by working together that we can turn the tide for nature. Thank you to everyone who joined us at the event, and for those who couldn't, we hope and look forward to meeting, talking and working together in the future. We can create a wilder future for Birmingham and the Black Country. For nature. For everyone.

A special thank you to The Priory Rooms Meeting & Conference Centre for the generous use of their beautiful Birmingham city centre-based venue as one of our recent and very valued business partners

Have you spotted any tigers? This is the scarlet tiger moth, and it seems to be another very good year for them! A strikingly beautiful, day-flying moth, look out for them resting on leaves or walls, or perhaps you'll be lucky to see a flash of their vivid red hindwings in flight. This one was spotted this morning on the way to our Centre of the Earth headquarters!
❓Did you know? Whilst they are tigers to us, in Germany they are known as the schönbär, which means beautiful bear!

Wild orchids! Have you spotted any across Birmingham and the Black Country? It's always a great day to spot the first common spotted orchid flowering in the meadow of our Centre of the Earth headquarters in Winson Green (and we got a bonus hoverfly in the picture too)! There are 57 species of orchid native to the UK, and here in Birmingham and the Black Country we have records of 15, plus one hybrid. Some are surprisingly easy to spot, whilst others are rarities and are only found in select areas. They are all absolutely stunning plants!

Here is the list of the top recorders in our area for the 2026 City Nature Challenge.

A big thank you to the dedicated recorders across Birmingham and the Black Country. Collectively, as a region, we made 13,978 observations of an incredible 1,434 different species.

Out of 285 participants, the top 15 contributors were responsible for nearly half of all observations recorded in our area - a remarkable achievement.

Leading the way, for both observations and species, is B&BC Wildlife Trust’s James Benwell, who alone contributed over 10% of the total observations!

This year, the top 15 recorders in each category can receive a B&BC City Nature Challenge badge. So, if your iNaturalist ID appears in one of those lists feel free to contact us, either on socials or via our email, and we can get one of our stylish badges delivered to you!

Today we marked an incredible milestone, celebrating our Head of Biodiversity Evidence and Planning, Sara Carvalho's 25 years of service at the Trust! This is another remarkable rung on what has been exceptional career. Having joined the Trust as our EcoRecord Manager in 2001, Sara has overseen the advancement of our Local Environmental Records Centre whilst achieving so much more. She has influenced policy and planning decisions, secured and supported our funding partners, worked with local ecologists and recording groups, and benefitted local nature conservation projects and wider initiatives across our region and beyond. Birmingham and the Black Country is a wilder place because of her work. We thank you immeasurably for 25 years, Sara, and here's to many more!

🎉We'd like to say a HUGE thank you to the brilliant pupils of Audley Primary School, Birmingham, whose fundraising efforts have raised a fantastic £786 to support our work for nature's recovery across the region! From charity bag packs to community litter picks and tree pruning, the school has been raising awareness of environmental issues and celebrating our planet, whilst our staff were bowled over by the passion and positivity of Audley's Eco Councillors on their recent trip to our EcoPark education centre!

💚It is always inspiring to see the blossoming of future naturalists and conservationists. Having recently celebrated the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough, it is his words which perfectly capture the importance of inspiring a love and appreciation of nature amongst our children: "If children don't grow up knowing about nature and appreciating it, they will not understand it, and if they don't understand it, they won't protect it. And if they don't protect it, who will?"

08/05/2026

🎉 Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David Attenborough! Thank you for helping generations of people fall in love with the natural world - for opening our eyes to its beauty, complexity and fragility, and for reminding us why it matters so deeply.

Through your storytelling, curiosity and unwavering commitment to truth, you have given wildlife a powerful voice and inspired people of all ages to care for the world around them.

Your influence reaches far beyond the screen. As our President Emeritus, it continues to guide and motivate our work every day, strengthening our shared mission to protect wildlife and wild places for the future.

You have inspired countless individuals and organisations to take action, helping to support 46 Wildlife Trusts built on respect, wonder and responsibility for nature. Thank you for everything you’ve done - from all of us at The Wildlife Trusts 💚🌍
