Forest Schools Birmingham

Forest Schools Birmingham Community Business of the Year; passionate about Mental Health and Nature Conservation 🌳🍃 Welcome to Forest Schools Birmingham; Community Interest Company.

Our initial organisation started in 1999 with Nick Wale; a Nature Conservationist passionate about nature and creating strong, healthy individuals and communities. Shortly before taking the leap to go freelance, Nick had struggled with a period of ME and had focused on finding healing through spending long periods of time immersed in the Natural World; this experience inspired Nick to train in 200

2 and become one of the cities (perhaps one of the country's) first independent Forest School Practitioners, ensuring that he continued to spend as much of his day in Nature as possible. In 2004, Nick met Afric Crossan. Afric was a Primary Teacher who had recently trained in the Forest School philosophy. Afric's autistic son was very young at the time and she was astounded by the therapeutic benefits the Natural World had on her son's anxiety levels. Through her own experiences in taking her son to find comfort and delight in Nature she developed a vision to use Forest School as an intervention tool, to reach and engage with children who have found themselves marginalised within school and social communities. At this point, Forest Schools Birmingham was born and we moved from being independent practitioners to a collective. Since these beginnings, Forest Schools Birmingham has grown and flourished. Imagine the Forest School philosophy and safety structure being the tool box and imagine us then adding to the box; Growing, Willow Weaving, Saxon and Viking Adventures, Story Telling, Green Woodwork and a whole host of other engagement programmes , all with one thing in common: developing inquisitive, creative, socially aware and self-regulating children - with a love and respect for the Natural World. We also added a host of absolutely wonderful educators with skills across a multitude of areas who slip in to any setting seamlessly, bringing passion to every moment to their practice. On top of our sessional work within schools across the region, we have been funded by numerous charitable foundations and organisations to work in a variety of communities across Birmingham and the Midlands region. Our work is always rooted in the Natural World and some of our community projects include:

• Kingstanding Food Community - a mental health project where volunteers grow produce at our allotments and cook and serve it in our community cafe.

• The Cole Valley Clean Up - an environmental project bringing people together to clear stretches of the Cole Valley of litter allowing it to be used as a space to take families recreationally. And we top off our services with:

• Forest School Leader Training - we are nationally recognised and have trained 100s of educators over the last 10 years. We adore this work!

• Grounds Design - we offer a wrap around service from design to installation, keeping nature intervention and sustainability at the core of the inception.

• Consultancy - looking for help and inspiration? We would be delighted to offer you help and advice. We are also very proud that over the years we have won 8 awards for our work including: Excellence in Training, 'Birmingham's Greenest Business' for two years running, non-profit of the year, community business of the year, food project of the year, we have been invited to Downing Street, we have featured on various TV programmes including Countryfile, BBC WM today, ITV Central and have been invited to contribute to The Parliamentary Review as a Best Practice Representative in the Education Sector - a great honour! We welcome working in partnership, and if you’ve read this far and you have a project you would like to work on with us ...... get in touch .. we are always interested in Social Projects

Growing Children 🌱
In a world increasingly intoxicated by screens, growing food helps children to reconnect with nature, to understand where food comes from, and to appreciate the wonders of the natural world.
Every seed planted is a lesson in hope and patience. Every shoot that emerges is proof that small actions can create something truly extraorinary.
The children we teach to grow today become the adults who will care for our natural world, our wildlife, and our planet tomorrow.

We are all different, each of us unique..
We like different things, we learn at different paces
Something that might scare one person, may be a joy to another..
In a Forest School environment, a child has the opportunity to get away from the harsh stimuli of the classroom.. the noise, the constant visuals, the constant instructions..
The child has a chance to breathe, find calm in the natural environment, to play individually or as part of a group in an unrestricted way... to step away from the technology where they often find comfort...
Our Forest School programmes have had profound effects on children with Autism and Developmental Delay conditions...
It allows children to interact and develop in ‘their own time, to find their own pace and space...’

Our Level 3 Forest School Training last week was so special 🌳❤️🌍
Over the week, we gathered in nature, shared our stories, laughed, sang, explored mental health, therapeutic practice, child development, practical skills, and so much more ❤️🌍
Every training leaves us feeling so deeply grateful for the people who choose this path. Watching another group of compassionate souls head out to into the world ready to support children through therapeutic nature connection is deeply humbling. We love this work 🌳🌳🌳
Thank you to every single person who brought their energy, openness, courage and kindness to the training. We are so honoured 🙏
Our Autumn Level 3 Forest School Training is now open for enquiries, with just 5 places remaining 🍂🌳

The new Home-Ed Forest School Community Day is now live, with the first session running next week.

This is a shift to a monthly rhythm — a full day in the woods (10–3), with more time for children to settle into what they’re doing, return to ideas, and build on them properly.

With a longer day, we can take on more involved projects and follow them through, whether that’s working with tools, building in the woodland, or cooking on the fire.

It also changes the feel for parents. There’s space to step back, have proper conversations, and get to know other families, rather than everything being squeezed into a couple of hours.

Across the day, there will be:

- Tools, fire, and bushcraft activities
- Open-ended play and exploration
- A shared meal cooked together on the fire
- A small, consistent group (max 12 children)
- Flexibility to stay, step away, or drop off

The first block runs on:

Wed 29 April
Wed 20 May
Wed 24 June

There’s a kind of magic in handing a real tool to a small pair of hands and saying, “I trust you.” 🌿

No screens. No saying ‘no, don’t touch that’… Just wood, weather, and their own sense of curiosity.

Confidence here isn’t taught…..it grows. 🌱🌳

You can almost see it…
The pause and adulation being given an ‘adult’ tool.
The spark as they try.
The pride when they succeed: “I did that.”

In forest school, children aren’t rushed. They wobble, experiment, and try again… and in this space, something magnificent takes root:

🌱 Problem-solving without fear of failure
🌱 Resilience through real challenge
🌱 Trust in their own judgement
🌱 A deep sense of capability

This isn’t just sawing wood, is it?
It’s a child learning they can meet this world without fear… and that confidence walks with them everywhere. 🌳
