WE ALL HAVE A ROLE.

It could be listening.
It could be noticing.
It could be speaking up.
It could be learning more.
It could be supporting a child who needs help.

As we wrap up the week, let's remember that protecting children starts with the little things:

“Please don't tell anyone…”

A child finally tells you something worrying.

Maybe they are scared. Maybe they're crying. Maybe they're not even sure how to explain what happened.

And honestly, you might not know what to say either.

You may feel angry. Shocked. Confused.

But take a breath.

That child has chosen you to talk to.

Start with something simple:

“Thank you for telling me.”

Then…

Listen.Don't rush them.

Reassure them.“I'm glad you told me.

Don't blame them. Never ask questions that make them feel responsible.

Don't interrogate them.You don't have to investigate everything yourself.

Don't promise secrecy. Let them know you may need to get help to keep them safe.

Take action. Follow the appropriate safeguarding and reporting procedures.

Sometimes, a child isn't looking for the perfect words.

They're looking for a safe adult.

Let's be that adult.

Imagine a 13-year-old comes to you and says:

An adult has been sending me uncomfortable messages online… but please don't tell anyone.

Would you keep the secret?
Would you ignore it?
Or would you know how to respond safely?

This is why **safeguarding awareness matters.

Children need adults who will listen, take them seriously, and help keep them safe—especially in online spaces.

STOP! A CHILD JUST TOLD YOU SOMETHING WORRYING. WHAT DO YOU SAY FIRST?

This moment matters more than you think.

A child may have taken a lot of courage to tell you what happened.

So before you react, pause. Listen.

“Thank you for telling me.”
🗣️ “I’m glad you told me.”
🤍 “You did the right thing by speaking up.”
🛡️ “I’m going to help you get the support you need.”

❌ Don’t blame them.
❌ Don’t shame them.
❌ Don’t interrogate them for details.
❌ Don’t tell them to keep it between the two of you.

Your reaction can either close the door to further disclosure—or help a child feel safe enough to speak again.

Let’s become adults children can trust. 🫶🏽

Would you tell them:

🗣️ “Speak up when something doesn't feel right.”
🛑 “It's okay to say NO.”
🤝 “Know who your trusted adults are.”
❤️ “Your body belongs to you.”
📱 “Be careful about who you trust online.”
