Cerebral Palsy Midlands

Cerebral Palsy Midlands Cerebral Palsy Midlands is a Birmingham based charity that empowers people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities from across the West Midlands.

Cerebral Palsy Midlands is a Registered Charity and adult day service provider that uplifts the lives of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities from across the West Midlands region. We were the first charity in England and Wales setup specifically for people with cerebral palsy, i 1947. Cerebral Palsy is an umbrella term for various different physical and learning disabilities, which is

primarily caused by oxygen deprivation to the brain before, during or after birth, leading to different degrees of damage to parts of the brain that control the body's muscles. This can lead to numerous physical disabilities, such as impaired movement of limbs, stiffness of muscles, impaired reflexes and exact movement. Because of the complexity of the brain, other disabilities and impairments can occur, such as learning, speech, vision and hearing difficulties. It is widely assumed throughout society that a person with cerebral palsy must have a learning disability. This is not always the case. According to NHS figures, around 1 in 400 people in the UK today have some form of the condition. Some people's cerebral palsy does not necessarily affect them in their everyday lives, while other people may need a high level of care and support. Our charity aims to empower people in every aspect of their life, to support individuals in attaining greater everyday skills, and to help develop their unique talents. Cerebral Palsy Midlands achieves this by following a person centred approach throughout its work, projects and services. It is human nature for individuals to strive to achieve success in their chosen field, as well as having recognition of this achievement. We fully believe that everyone has the right to be an active citizen, regardless of any disability they may have. We run a community centre in Harborne, Birmingham, which provides much needed daycare, activities, training and educational courses for people over the age of 19, who are classed as having substantial and critical needs. We also support people in accessing the local community; combating social isolation, as well as organising short break holidays throughout the year.

πŸŽ‰ It's Volunteer Week, and we want to shine a spotlight on an incredible individual who brings joy to our community. And that is John Landruff! 🌟

Despite his own eyesight impairment, John continues to make a significant impact as a dedicated volunteer. Formerly a staff member, he transitioned to volunteering after stepping away from full-time employment for health reasons.

Every Tuesday and Friday morning, John creates gaming opportunities for our citizens by providing adapted gaming switches, joysticks, and pads. His commitment ensures that everyone. And yes, even the quietest among us, can enjoy PS4 gaming and racing! πŸ•ΉοΈβœ¨

John's passion for helping others is truly admirable. He works tirelessly to support each participant, finding ways to adapt and make sure everyone can join in on the fun. We are so lucky to have him as part of our team of volunteers! πŸ’–

Thank you, John, for your unwavering dedication and kindness!

🌟 It's Volunteer Week! 🌟

We caught up with our amazing volunteer, Amanda, who shared her inspiring journey with us. After taking a course at Bournville College focused on community engagement, Amanda found her passion for support and care work here at Cerebral Palsy Midlands.

Her favourite part? Helping others and witnessing their happiness! Whether it's taking folks out for meals or bingo, or lending a hand at events like the 'Weoley Big Night Out' and the 'Summer Sizzler Community Fete', Amanda truly makes a difference.

When we asked her to sum up her volunteering experience in three words, she said: "Fantastic, Amazing, and Helpful!" πŸ’–

Join us in celebrating the incredible impact of our volunteers!

🌟 Volunteer Week Spotlight 🌟

Meet Emma, one of our dedicated staff members who supports the Thursday afternoon horse riding sessions at Seecham with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). Emma shares that the RDA volunteers have been making a difference in our community for over 50 years, driven by their love for horse riding and their commitment to giving back. 🐴❀️

Thanks to these incredible volunteers, our citizens have access to unique opportunities that enhance their physical and mental well-being. It takes dedication, time, and compassion to support individuals as they learn to ride and enjoy the experience of being on horseback.

Emma says it best: "They come every week, come rain or shine; they are good people." πŸ™Œ

We're so grateful for our RDA volunteers! Let's celebrate their hard work and passion this Volunteer Week!

🌟 It's Volunteer Week, and we want to shine a spotlight on an incredible volunteer who has been with us since 2009.....Vic! 🌟

Vic first joined us during his work placement at Bournville College and quickly became an integral part of our team. Despite taking a few breaks, he always finds his way back, driven by his passion for helping others.

After caring for his dad, Vic was inspired to give back to the community and support those in need. He loves the variety that volunteering brings; no two days are the same! Each experience, whether it's a holiday to Blackpool or day trips to Valencia, has enriched his life and the lives of those he helps.

Thank you, Vic, for your dedication and the joy you bring to our community! ❀️
