Across departments and differences, our members are united. When we strike together, we show what community power really looks like.

We asked our members why they felt hopeful about the strike:
“It’s great to see so many people across departments come out in support of a totally justified action.”
“Despite political differences, my entire department is in the union and are all striking. It’s encouraging to all be working together on this”

We’re proud of our members, the people who make the University work every single day. Each of their stories matter, and every single one gives us perspective and strength. Striking reminds us what solidarity really means. It means coming together, supporting one another, and remembering our strength.

We asked our members why they felt hopeful about the strike:
“During a strike we all come together in a way that isn't possible in any other part of University or union life. We are reminded that despite being such a huge institution, we all belong to the same branch family. “

A 1.4% offer, rising prices, and fewer staff to do more work.
Our members have had enough.

We asked our members why they are on strike:

“The offer of 1.4% is below inflation, and together with job cuts at the University, it ensures those of us remaining will have to cover for those absent former colleagues. I believe we have a good reason to strike on these and other issues.”

Pay isn’t keeping up with the cost of living, and our members are feeling it every month. Meanwhile, the University continues to expand and profit.

We asked our members why they are on strike:
“My rent went up £110 a month this year. All my other bills have increased too. My pay only went up £50 a month. How am I supposed to keep up with that? I materially have less money every month than I did a year ago. Its despicable that the uni takes on more and more students, tells us often how much money it has, and then turns around and says they cant pay us what we are worth.”

“Work smarter” doesn’t fix understaffing. It pushes the responsibility of high workloads onto individual staff.
Our members know the truth: it’s not them, it's systemic. You can’t strategise your way out of an exhausted workforce.

We asked our members why they are on strike:

“I am angry that, when it seems clear to everyone doing the work that what causes this epidemic of stress is under staffing, poor management choices and overly bureaucratic systems, the only answer University management can come up with is "just work smarter".
It takes creativity to work smarter. Cooperation in teams and between teams. It takes an environment where no one is firefighting. Management need to wake up and realise that no amount of strategising will ever make up for an understaffed, under supported workforce.”]

Our members are watching colleagues burn out and leave, because the pressure has become impossible.
This isn’t sustainable. It’s why we’re striking.

We asked our members why they are on strike:
“One by one, I watch as the number of pink out of office messages grow:
"[staff member] is currently out of the office and may not respond to messages."
More staff reaching burnout. More staff going on sick leave. More staff leaving this University and never coming back because they simply can't survive under the pressure.”]

IN THE NEWS: UoB Unison rep Mike Moore: lIt’s a very wealthy institution and they have the ability to make choices, unfortunately the choice they are making at the moment is not to invest in their support staff”

Yet again, our members showed up and stood together in force! We are always proud of our members, but our picket lines are always something special. We never want it to reach the point where we have to take action. When we need to, our members bring the energy and kindness to turn it into a celebration of community!

Every person who shows up makes the line stronger ✊ It’s also the best way to make sure you’re fully registered as taking part in the action, making it easier to claim strike pay.

Day one of strike action, completed! Thank you to all of our members who came, caught up with colleagues, shared out the sausage rolls and joined in the chants. See you all again tomorrow- we’ve got this!

And we are off! This is what today is all about, showing up for our colleagues and standing together to prove what happens when we aren't there to support, schedule, fix, clean, cook and prepare everything that keeps UoB functioning. See you all on the picket lines!
