ACP The Family Wellbeing Centre

ACP The Family Wellbeing Centre Our mission is to enable the people of Sparkbrook, and the surrounding area, to improve their quality of life by working together in creating opportunities

Ashiana is the Urdu word for nest - a safe nurturing place for growth and development, which is indicative of the approach and atmosphere we have tried to apply here at Ashiana. Our aim is to improve quality of life for those living in Sparkbrook, by creating opportunities for improvements to their social, physical and economic wellbeing, and supporting them to achieve their aspirations. Ashiana C

ommunity Project is a registered charity based in the heart of Sparkbrook, Birmingham. It was established by local residents in 1997 to offer a community resource that is inclusive to all local people. Sparkbrook grew rapidly in the late Nineteenth Century in the latter part of the Industrial Revolution with private housing originally mainly occupied by the more affluent skilled working class employed in Birmingham's manufacturing sector. The area became home to newcomers to the City and, for some, the UK; firstly a substantial Irish community settled in the area and then, since 1945, the areas has attracted settlers from New Commonwealth countries. The largest representation is currently Pakistani and Pakistani/Kashmiri ethnic background. Birmingham is the UK's second city and continues to attract a large number of students and migrating families from a wide variety of ethnic, educational, religious and cultural backgrounds. Even so, or perhaps because of it, several Birmingham wards have been highlighted as deprived poor areas

As part of Let's Talk About Women's Health, funded by Fairer Futures, our healthy cooking sessions are creating spaces where women can come together to learn, share and make positive changes to their wellbeing.

Led by cooking instructor Fatima , these sessions are about more than preparing nutritious meals. They are an opportunity to exchange recipes, learn healthier ways of cooking and enjoy the simple pleasure of gathering around food and conversation.

From traditional dishes to everyday favourites, each session encourages women to make small changes that support healthier lifestyles while celebrating the flavours and traditions that connect our communities.

Because good health begins with knowledge, shared experiences and the confidence to make choices that nourish both body and mind.

Last week, as part of Carers Week, we held a wonderful Carers Creative Day at Bethak, bringing carers together for an afternoon of creativity, wellbeing and connection.

From Mindful Pebble Mandala Art and beautiful Henna Art, to open-air fitness sessions, information and support, and plenty of refreshments, the day offered a chance for carers to take some well-deserved time for themselves and enjoy being part of a warm and welcoming community.

It was lovely to see people relaxing, sharing stories, trying something new and simply enjoying each other's company. These moments of connection are at the heart of what community is all about.

A heartfelt thank you to all the artists, volunteers and carers who made the day so special. Your time, creativity, kindness and support created a truly memorable atmosphere. We are also grateful to our partners at Birmingham Carers Hub for their continued support.

Create. Connect. Celebrate.

Our storytelling space at Bethak is vibrant with stories, memories and shared experiences. Through engaging storytelling sessions led by our wonderful storyteller, Catriona, we are helping to revive the tradition of oral storytelling in this increasingly digital age.

Stories have always been a way of passing on memories, wisdom and culture from one generation to the next. They keep our heritage alive, allowing voices from older times to continue to inspire and shape new creative work for today.

At Bethak, the old and the new come together. Traditional tales are reimagined through contemporary approaches, creating a living connection between past and present. In a world moving ever faster, taking time to listen, reflect and share stories has never been more important.

Bethak is a space for connection, creativity and belonging. If you would like to join us, we would be delighted to welcome and host you.
