The Chrysalis Youth Empowerment Network - Uganda Developing young people in Uganda to become changemakers; enabling young people to become social entrepreneurs. Watch this space!

The Chrysalis Youth Empowerment Network (CYEN) is based at the Chrysalis Centre in Kireka, Kampala, Uganda, located on edge of the Acholi Quarter. It's a small place, but it has hosted two youth conferences and run activities as diverse as taekwon-do and watercolour painting, acrobatics and intellectual boardgames, athletics and eating competitions, as well as the first Slum Run! It's colourful an

d is meant to stimulate young people to think of a better future for themselves and their community. Many of the activities are run by the youth themselves, but also experts are brought in to teach specialist sports or activities. The Acholi Quarter is a slum district in Kampala and children there are usually poorly nourished, lacking in investment and often unable to go to school, due to school fees issues. Whilst local schools are not so costly, still families have many children and thus they often cannot afford fees, let alone the activities presented at the Chrysalis Centre. Lastly, the Chrysalis Centre is the headquarters of the Butterfly Project for young social entrepreneurs and it is here where some young people are trained up to become changemakers. To date, CYEN has been supported only by personal donations. It has no big NGO to back it and without ongoing donations it will run out of money to continue. The Centre has enormous impact in this community and has trained young people from all over Kampala and many of these are running activities in their own local communities, having been trained at the Chrysalis Centre. So, please consider this cause and support it, if you can. Plans are afoot to expand these services in other parts of Uganda. This September, we’re bringing together some of the most talented young runners (ages 9–15) for our latest Platinum League athletics competition.

Kids from West Nile region, Arua and Terrego, Omoro, and Agago to the North East will compete under the banner of the Uganda Athletics Federation, a huge step forward for young athletes in the region.

But here’s the challenge: getting these young athletes to the track and feeding them. Transport costs are tough, and without support, many won’t make it.

We've launched a Crowdfunder, to give every child the chance to shine on this stage.

If you can, please chip in (or share!) to help us reach our goal. Every bit makes a difference.

For years young Ugandan athletes have had little opportunity to flourish. This competition gives children 9-15 chance to show their ability

Meet Daniel, a dedicated Butterfly Project changemaker from Northern Uganda, now accepted into a Nursing and Midwifery Certificate program at Gulu Institution of Health Sciences. This isn’t just a career path, it’s his calling. Growing up, Daniel witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by his community: children orphaned, mothers at risk in childbirth, and families without access to care. He wants to change that.

Daniel needs £450 to cover his tuition, registration, course materials, and essential medical equipment for the semester. We've already raised £144, but time is running out, he must reach his goal by 31 August 2025

Donate today to support Daniel’s journey, and share this campaign to help spread the word. Together, we can fund his first step toward saving lives and building hope where it is needed most.

We are pleased to announce that, thanks to your generous support, we have successfully reached 100% of the fundraising target for Jimmy’s second operation. This achievement would not have been possible without the kindness and commitment of all who donated and shared his story.

The funds raised will ensure that Jimmy receives the treatment he urgently requires, as well as support for transport and essential needs during his recovery. We extend our sincere gratitude to each and every supporter who contributed to making this milestone a reality. Your generosity has given Jimmy the hope and opportunity for a brighter, more independent future.

We are so grateful to everyone who has supported Jimmy’s recovery journey so far, we’ve already raised 55% of the funds needed for his second operation.

This generosity has brought Jimmy a step closer to walking without crutches, but we still need to raise the remaining amount to make his surgery possible. The target is £930 in total, covering the operation as well as transport and food for Jimmy and his mum during recovery. Every contribution, big or small, makes a real difference to his future.

Please help us cross the finish line by donating or sharing Jimmy’s story with your network. Together, we can give him the chance to walk freely again.

When Jimmy was just 14, he faced the unimaginable, an infection in his leg that left him unable to walk without crutches. Thanks to the kindness of many of you, he was able to have his first operation, giving him hope that he could one day walk freely again. But Jimmy’s journey isn’t over. The infection has damaged his kneecap, and he now needs a second operation to continue his recovery.

Together, we’ve already raised 23% of the funds needed, but we still have a way to go. Our target is £930 to cover the surgery, as well as transport and food for Jimmy and his mum while he heals. Every donation, no matter the size, brings him closer to walking again, something every child deserves.

Please consider supporting or sharing Jimmy’s story so we can give him the future he’s fighting for.

Thanks to everyone who’s been cheering us on, we officially hit our fundraising goal for this year’s Uganda Board Game Convention!

This means we can go ahead as planned, ship the last batch of games, get all the materials ready, and make sure every child has what they need for four unforgettable days of learning through play.

While we were getting everything in place, we also realised we had a few unexpected hurdles to clear. Our water system, built for far fewer people, can’t keep up with the 500+ attendees we’ll have this year. The old pump was beyond repair, so we’ve been working on upgrading it with a stronger solar pump. We also found that some of our chairs and tables from last year are no longer usable and will need replacing so everyone has space to play.

That’s why we’ve set a stretch target — to make sure the Convention runs smoothly for every participant. We’ve still got about £1,100 to go, and any extra support will go directly into these essentials.

If you’d like to help us cross this final milestone, you can support us here:

Thank you for helping us make this possible, we can’t wait to share the Convention with you!

Proud of our students at Chrysalis Secondary School for bringing conservation issues to the stage!

Their latest drama shines a spotlight on real challenges rural communities face, from bush burning and deforestation for firewood, to the impact of hunting on wildlife. A creative and bold effort to spark awareness and dialogue!
