Holders Woods and Brockley Grove are listed as ‘Ancient Replanted Woodland’ and are a national ‘Site of Importance for Nature Conservation’ (SINC). Brockley Grove is part of the River Rea ‘Site of Local Importance for Nature Conservation’ (SLINC), an important corridor for wildlife.
We are a friendly bunch, keen to promote and protect the biodiversity and heritage of the woods and surrounding area. We meet mainly on 1st Sundays of the month, 2-4pm (except Bank Holidays) to carry out activities agreed with BCC Park Rangers, to help manage, maintain and enhance these lovely surroundings.

Whilst volunteering in Holders Woods and Brockley Grove, we’ve learned about how the area housed prefabs after WWII until the mid 1970’s when they were knocked down. You can still see the road up from Moor Green lane Doctors and the turning circle in front of the field and path into the woods.
We would love to find out more about these prefabs and their gardens.
We have escapee lupins, apple trees and other garden plants that still happily grow here.
We are considering a small project to show off this important local history.
The photos below show members of the prefabs having a coronation party.
Do you have any information you could share? Any photos of the prefabs or their gardens?
Please get in touch if you have any information or photos you can share.

A great session at the weekend with 15 members of Holders Woods Conservation working hard to clear the woods, fields and river banks of litter and bits of flytipping. (Also reported the mess in the hedge by the Redgra AGAIN.)
We cut back a fallen tree at Fritillary triangle, cleared two blocked drains in the car park, observed birds visiting our bird boxes, removed the bandage off a repaired tree, cleared some invasive plants…. And had fun! All this in 2hrs!
Our next session will be a week later on Sunday 10th May due to the bank holiday. Meeting at 2pm at the top of the carpark, by the containers. Do come along if you are free :-)

Busy session last weekend. Last tree work of the winter included some hazel coppicing and cutting or removal of dead wood around, in and attached to some oaks on Brockley grove. Also great to have the brambles cleared by one of our scythers on the meadow.
We now enter a time when we need to take care around trees and ponds to not disturb anything, as the birds are sorting their territories and starting to nest and the tadpoles are soon to be wiggling!
Spring in all its glory has finally arrived! 🥰

It’s been a busy day in Holders Woods today. Lots of the team working on fallen branches and boughs from the recent storms, planting native snowdrops, litter picking 5 bags of rubbish, clearing the flooded carpark by clearing the drains, cutting back low hanging thorny bushes off the main path, and generally walking though checking and reporting two lots of fly tipping.
Take care if you use the car park at the moment, there are some huge potholes.
Many thanks to everyone for their hard work today, particularly working in the drizzle 💪🥰

Busy day with Holders Woods Conservation! Clearing the second inlet to the long pond, litter picking through the woods & fields, plus our annual haircut for the willow arch opposite Second Avenue (of which a large amount of the willow went to Moor Green lane Allotments for making Christmas robins!
Fantastic afternoon. Thank you to everyone who supports us with both kind words and hard graft! We do our best to look after where we live - and we make sure to enjoy it too! ❤️

Great November session with pond work, litter picking, spring inlet clearing, tree planting. All because we love our woods. ❤️
We did get a bit muddy and smelly! (Or was that just me!) 🤣
