♻️ Zero Waste Week 7th to 11th September 2026 with Building Greener Communities 🌱

What a brilliant week of sharing skills, swapping ideas and finding simple ways to waste less!

Across three community activities at our partner organisations and we’ve been celebrating by showing that reducing waste doesn’t have to be complicated – small, everyday changes can make a real difference!

🧵 Stitch, Repair & Rewear – at Allens Cross.
We kicked off the week on Monday with a collaboration with Arts 50 Alive weekly class, exploring sustainable fashion and the value of repairing rather than replacing. Participants of all abilities learnt and shared textile skills, from threading a needle and simple running stitches to creating patches that can give well-loved clothes a new lease of life.

🫓 Roti Reinvented – Sparkhill
Next we turned our attention to food waste, using leftover roti as the starting point for some cultural fusion cooking. Working together in small groups, participants transformed it into three completely different dishes – quesadillas, mini quiches and bread-and-butter pudding. Alongside the cooking came lots of conversation, with people sharing their own ideas and experiences of using up food and avoiding waste at home.

🍞 Waste Less, Save More – Allens Cross Cooking Club
We rounded off the week today with our monthly Cooking Club, where residents transformed leftover bread into a tasty bread strata. The session sparked plenty of discussion about food waste, ways to use up what we already have and simple techniques that can save both food and money.

💚 Across all three activities, one of the best parts has been the conversations!

That’s exactly what Building Greener Communities is about: bringing people together, sharing skills and making greener choices feel achievable, useful and enjoyable.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and to our facilitators, volunteers and community partners who helped make the week happen. 🌍♻️
