Over three years, MJF Global partnered with Child's i Foundation to strengthen foster care and family care systems in Uganda. We are pleased to share a new report capturing the impact, challenges and learning that emerged from this work, and what it can teach us about building sustainable family care.
Since 2009, Child's i has worked to ensure that children grow up in families. Their approach combines family strengthening, community gatekeeping, reunification, foster care, and close collaboration with government systems. Central to this work is a deep commitment to community leadership and ownership, building on strengths that already exist within families and communities.
The report explores what can be achieved when communities, families and government leaders work together to strengthen family care. It offers valuable learning for those interested in foster care, systems change and preventing unnecessary family separation.
Among the project's outputs:
• 117 foster care households established
• 73 children supported through foster care
• 25 children reintegrated with their families
• 49 government officials trained to support long-term implementation and oversight
One of the report's key findings is that fewer children entered foster care than originally anticipated because stronger gatekeeping and family support meant fewer children required separation from their families.
Most importantly, the report explores the lessons behind the numbers.
