Cooking on a Budget is back at the Brandwood Centre!

This week we launched our brand-new Cooking on a Budget sessions, kindly funded by Platform Housing, and this time we’re focusing on the wonders of the slow cooker!

We had such a lovely, relaxed session today getting to know a new group of local residents, all of whom had never used a slow cooker before.

We kicked things off with a cooking demonstration, trying out the Slow Cooker Mac & Cheese recipe from Cadent’s Slow Cooker Recipe Book 'A Taste of Home' - and of course, we had to finish with something sweet! The Peach Cobbler, served with a generous helping of vanilla ice cream, definitely went down a treat… delicious! 😋

The group will enjoy 4 more sessions with us and are all looking forward to receiving their very own FREE slow cooker at the end of the programme, so they can put their new skills into practice at home, try out some new recipes and hopefully save both time and money along the way.

A big thank you to Platform Housing for making these sessions possible and helping us support local people in practical, friendly and enjoyable ways.

💙 NEW! Pop-Up Health & Wellbeing Café at Brandwood 💙

We’re really pleased to be launching our first Pop-Up Health & Wellbeing Café at Brandwood Community Centre on:

📅 Wednesday 30 September 2026
🕐 1:00pm–2:30pm
📍 Brandwood Community Centre, 157 Allens Croft Road, Kings Heath, B14 6RP

For our first session, we’ll be joined by the Liver Disease Detection Project, giving local residents the opportunity to have a FREE liver health check.

You may be eligible if you are aged 18–75 and meet one or more of the following criteria:

🍷 Drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week
🩺 Have a history of, or are at risk of, Hepatitis B or C
💚 Are over 50 and have fatty liver disease
💙 Are over 50 with Type 2 diabetes and a BMI over 30 (or 27 depending on ethnicity)

These are the eligibility criteria shown on the NHS Liver Disease Detection Project information poster.

There’s no need to feel nervous — this is all about making health checks easy, friendly and accessible within your own community.

So if you think you may qualify, pop down, have a chat and get checked. It could be one of the most important things you do for your health.

☕ Our Pop-Up Health & Wellbeing Café will also be a relaxed place to have a cuppa, talk to health professionals and find out more about looking after your wellbeing.

💙 Help us make Brandwood a Cool Centre! 💙

We’ve launched our GoFundMe appeal to help raise funds towards air conditioning for Brandwood Community Centre.

We are already proud to be a Centre for Warmth, providing a safe and welcoming place for our community during the colder months. Now, following increasingly hot summers, we would love to make sure we can offer that same comfortable and welcoming environment all year round by becoming a Cool Centre too. ☀️❄️

Our Centre is used every week by older people, families, community groups and local residents, and we want everyone who walks through our doors to feel comfortable and safe.

We recently held our summer community fundraising event and were overwhelmed by the support we received. Now we’re asking our wider community to help us take the next step.

WOW… WHAT A COMMUNITY!

We were absolutely thrilled to welcome almost 300 people to our annual fundraising event at Brandwood Community Centre last Friday!

There was plenty of fun for all the family, lots of activities and goodies, and even the sun came out at just the right time!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came along, supported the event, volunteered their time, made a donation, helped behind the scenes, or simply came to enjoy the afternoon with us - every little bit helped make this event a success!

We genuinely couldn’t do what we do without the support of our local community.
