Welcome Community Garden

Welcome Community Garden We run a weekly gardening group at our Community Garden for people in recovery, whether they live in Solihull or Birmingham.

Welcome Change is "Changing lives through Enterprise", offering jobs and volunteering opportunities and building communities through its community centre, community garden and community hubs. Welcome Change is wholly owned by Welcome, a small charity, which is a partner in SIAS (Solihull Integrated Addiction Services), helping those affected by substance misuse through treatment into recovery. Our wintery Garden!
Winter is a quieter time in the garden, but there’s still plenty to do together!

Tidy up – Clear away dead plants, fallen leaves and weeds to keep beds healthy.
Protect plants – Cover beds with mulch, compost or fleece to protect soil and roots from frost.
Plant winter crops – Garlic, onions and broad beans can still be planted during winter months.
Care for wildlife – Put out bird feeders and create safe spaces for insects and wildlife.
Fix & plan – Repair raised beds, paths and tools, and start planning what you’ll grow in spring.
Connect & learn – Winter is a great time for warm drinks, garden chats and sharing ideas.

A community garden is about more than growing food – it’s about growing connections all year round!

When temperatures go below zero they will always affect your cold sensitive plants. Frost can be fatal.

If front has effected your plants you can:

1 - Cut back frost affected stems to encourage new growth

2 - Smaller plants can be moved to a greenhouse or put on a windowsill. This will sometimes encourage recovery if the damage wasn't too severe.

3 - Improve drainage in soil to stop overwatering.

Did you know plants can “talk” to each other!
Some plants release chemicals through their roots or into the air to warn neighbouring plants about pests or danger. For example, if one plant is attacked by aphids, it might emit a scent that tells nearby plants to start producing natural insecticides!

Nature’s gossip network!
