Soho Road is getting some negative press as a small number of shops are run by organised gangs, who exploit vulnerable people and locals 😔

So I wanted to share here incase people wanted to check out a positive local landmark by loads of good food 😎

This is C&S Homestore on Soho Road — it’s family run and has been open since the 1960s 😱

It’s an ‘everything store’. But, I’ve realised that not everyone is aware of these everything stores — but they basically have… everything 😂

Kitchenware, homeware, incense, fabrics, I saw shampoo as well 😄

I’m out here today with a couple of residents who’re starting a cooking class for vulnerable men in Winson Green - and we’re grabbing everything from here 🥰

Abandoned building in Hockley used as a w**d farm 😱

Residents were complaining about squatters in an abandoned building on Clissold Street in Hockley 👎🏻

The Police working with Birmingham City Council realised it was squatters who were growing w**d 🤦🏽‍♂️

Today the building was secured and made safe by the council - and residents don’t need to worry about squatters and living next to a grow house 🙏🏽

What do you think about it - tackling drug dealing, knife crime, antisocial behaviour and more on Soho Road?

A little story about inconsiderate, dumped rubbish... 🤔

Now, what you see is a terraced house where the front garden area is full of rubbish 😔

This is not fly tipping because the owner has done this on their own property 🏠

However, unless there is express evidence it's causing environmental issues it's really hard to get an owner to remove this off their own property 🤔

HOWEVER, me and Su checked with the council and this property is Supported Exempt Accommodation - so the manager of the property has higher expectations to make the property fit for habitation 👍

So we managed to get the property manager to clear the front of the property - the neighbour and other residents were very happy, as were the tenants 😊

Sometimes we need to be creative with how we try to resolve issues like this! 💪🏽

Some people ask me what it's like to be a councillor in Soho and Jewellery Quarter 🤔

Yes there are lots of differences between these parts of the city but there are some similar challenges they face 😔

These bins on Vittoria Street are contaminated - they are recycling bins that have been left for months by the building management company 🙁

They have not provided their tenants with any bin storage facilities, meaning bins are left on the street, attract fly tipping and become contaminated angry - this causes more issues on the road with vermin and more rubbish 😔

So me and Su are contacting this building management company to get rid of the contaminated bins and provide proper storage 😮

We're hitting the ground running as your local councillors and we will continue doing the best for our residents in Soho and Jewellery Quarter 🌹

As a councillor you could genuinely spend 7 days a week reporting fly tipping 🤦🏽All that work for it to come back again ...

As a councillor you could genuinely spend 7 days a week reporting fly tipping 🤦🏽

All that work for it to come back again a couple of days (and sometimes hours) later 😮

As they say, prevention is better than the cure... ✍🏽

This means we need to focus on some of the root causes of fly tipping - like unscrupulous landlords, inaccessible tips, the bin strikes, and absolutely in some cases we have people who just don't care 😔

So while I do share wins like this, the real win will be when we don't have to report fly tipping as much because it's less of an issue 🙏🏽

Opearation Fearless is making a real impact on Soho Road and in Handsworth 💪🏽

Residents are telling me they feel safe to go onto their high street for the first time in years 🤩

We have a lot more to do, but they've gotten off to a great start 👍
