I’ve been meaning to write this for a while because something happened afew weeks ago that has really stayed with me.
Myself and Mark went out to a road traffic accident where a poor cat had sadly lost its life. We didn’t know whose cat it was, but we couldn’t just leave this poor animal lying at the side of the road.
We contacted several veterinary practices that were open for out of hours, hoping they could take the cat so it could at least be dealt with respectfully.
We were told that if we brought the cat in, we would be charged an out-of-hours fee, with communal cremation charges on top.
We explained that this was not our cat. We weren’t bringing in our own animal for treatment. We had simply gone out to collect a cat that had been killed on the road because we felt it was the right thing to do..
So I have to ask: WHAT ARE WE & MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC SUPPOSED TO DO?
Are we really expected to leave these poor animals lying at the side of the road because there is nowhere to take them?
What happens to the next cat, dog or other animal that is killed on our roads?
Are people supposed to drive past and leave them there because they cannot afford potentially hundreds of pounds in fees?
I completely understand that veterinary practices have costs and that out-of-hours services need to be funded. This isn’t about blaming individual vets or veterinary staff.
It’s about there being a huge gap in the system.
People like us WILL stop.
We WILL try to help.
We WILL care.
But when even the organisations and services you believe you can turn to are unable to help, what are we actually supposed to do?
These poor animals deserve to be treated with dignity, even after they have lost their lives.
There needs to be a clear and accessible system for members of the public & Rescue volunteers who find an animal that has been killed on the road or found elsewhere — one that allows the animal to be collected or taken and dealt with respectfully.
Because leaving a deceased animal to rot simply doesn’t seem right to me.
I genuinely want to know: what are we supposed to do? 💔🐾
Please share this. Maybe someone knows a out of hours veterinary practice with no charges, can let us know.
Just because were a rescue actually means nothing, infact were more likely to be charged, going of different vets charging in normal working hours cremation charges.

Also does anyone know if this applies to every RSPCA branch or just the main centres ?

🐾 What an amazing team of volunteers! ❤️🐾

Today was Adoption Day at Petsearch Rescue, and what a wonderful day it was! 🐶🐱

We had 13 adoptions go ahead, all planned in advance, giving 13 lucky pets the chance to start their next chapter. ❤️🏡

We also had our cake stall and knick-knack table for everyone to browse, raising a fantastic £60! 🎂🛍️ Every penny helps support the animals in our care.

Hoping Kitten Season 2026 starts winding down for rescuers, TNR groups everywhere, your efforts are appreciated by the furry souls you have assisted this season.

Spay and neuter, TNR of community cats is the only humane solution to ending cat overpopulation. Adoption alone cannot place all the cats needing homes currently.

Nonny isn’t just waiting for her food… she’s waiting for her foster mom to arrive too. HURRY UP, MoMMY!!! 😭😂
Honestly, WHAT is this screaming?! 😩🤣 You’d think this poor child hadn’t eaten in 17 years.
Meanwhile, all our residents get 3 meals a day AND dry food available 24/7… yet apparently Nonny has been abandoned and is being forced to survive on nothing but fumes. 😭😂
The dramatics. The complaints. The sheer audacity. 😂🐾
Someone tell this tiny screamer that her mommy is coming! ♡
