Our campaign for a transformative green park at Smithfield, in the heart of Birmingham started in April 2015. Publicly owned, comparable in size to parks in great cities around the world (eg St James Park in London), this was Birmingham’s opportunity to create a flexible green hub at its heart for its citizens. But despite the support of thousands, the council chose a different path. Ten years later the land is now with developers. There will be some green space and even a small park, thanks to the campaign, but that’s about it. Now the city must make the best of what is left by creating a joined up network of open spaces across the city, connected by green corridors.
