Moor Pool Allotment Association

Moor Pool Allotment Association Welcome to the Moor Pool Allotment Association page. Welcome to the Moor Pool Allotment Association website. Many could have been built upon.

The allotments are an intrinsic part of the historic Moor Pool garden suburb founded by John Sutton Nettlefold. The Association is here to represent the interests of its Members and ensure the maximum use of the allotments in an appropriate manner. Our Members will be guardians of an important aspect of Britains social history. That carries responsibilities beyond self interest of having and manag

ing an allotment. Future visitors to Moor Pool will be looking at the allotments in the context of the history of the garden suburb movement. Moor Pool with the number of allotments it retains is an exemplary example which should promote both the interests of the allotment association but the Moor Pool Heritage Trust as it seeks ways to fund and maintain the Estate in the future. We have what we have in the way of allotments, because residents fought a heated battle in 2006-2009 to save them. We now have a responsibility to ensure that having saved the majority, we bring them back into use, respect and look after them.

As part of our 10th anniversary celebrations, we're featuring ten 'People of Moor Pool'. This month we're paying tribute to Barbara Ikin, who lived on the Moor Pool Estate for the majority of her life and sadly died in December 2024, aged 99. When Moor Pool's community spaces came under threat of being sold for development in 2011, Barbara played a big part in the work to save them and this gave her a new lease of life. The 'Moor Pool project' was always very much a part of her and very close to her heart. Read more about Barbara at https://www.moorpoolhall.org.uk/people-of-moor-pool-barbara-ikin/ 🤍

It's the Guinea Gardens annual allotment show on Sunday 18th August from 1pm. All welcome. A great opportunity to visit these historic allotments. The entrance to the Guinea Gardens is just further down the road from the Botanical Gardens but you will need to park elsewhere.

Pereira Road allotments will be open on Sunday 18th August. As well as the plots, the Birmingham Beekeepers will be at the hives they have on site to chat about bee keeping, and Paul from the Nature Reserve will be on hand to talk about the ways they are trying to improve habitats.
The gates will be open from 11. These allotments are always well worth a visit.

Dodging the showers to keep up with the hedges is far from my favourite task, but as an allotment holder with a beech hedge bordering the plot, it's a necessary one.

On this day in 1908, the first completed house of the estate was officially opened on the corner of Park Hill Road and Moor Pool Avenue. The land in the background looks slightly different 116 years on!

An unexpected visit in the allotment this morning

The UK's only naturalised parrot. It's medium-sized with a green body, long-tail, red beak and a pink and black ring around its face and neck. In flight, it has pointed wings and a long tail. It flies very steadily, directly and speedily. It's often found in flocks, which can reach hundreds at a roo...
