We are so so so proud to say that Moseley Road Baths CIO's Chair Lucy has won Birmingham’s Jane Jacobs award. Jane Jacobs was an incredible journalist, activist and advocate for the built environment. In response to Jacobs’ work, this award recognises local women for their outstanding achievements in raising public awareness, empathy and understanding of urban change.
We at MRB know that Lucy has (seemingly!) endless energy, passion and knowledge when advocating for Birmingham and more specifically for Balsall Heath and Moseley Road Baths and so this award is very well deserved.
The award is organised by the members of Save Smallbrook, a consortium of Brutiful Birmingham, Birmingham Modernist Society, C20 Society, Zero Carbon House, and Birmingham Fair Housing, supported by Birmingham City University Department of Architecture and the Built Environment. We wanted to share with you the reason that Lucy was chosen as the winner:
“The panel were in agreement that Lucy has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of the repurposing of heritage buildings. At both a strategic and practical level the influence of her work will be long lasting. Previously working for the National Trust Lucy developed the National Trust’s first city strategy for activating historic buildings and green spaces. But it is more for her work at a local level that this award is granted. Lucy has shown leadership and commitment over many years to the rescue and redevelopment of Moseley Road Baths and Library. The panel commended Lucy for her persistence against challenging odds in the very lengthy campaign for Moseley Road baths.
The success is in no small part due to her ability to work with a range of Stakeholders and at the same time ensure that the voices of local residents were central to plans for the future of the building. The Panel recognised Lucy as a first-class networker, always alert to what is happening at the local and wider level.”
Lucy, in true MRB style we will toast you with some Elton John zero-secco!!!!
