We are so so so proud to say that Moseley Road Baths CIO's Chair Lucy has won Birmingham’s Jane Jacobs award. Jane Jacobs was an incredible journalist, activist and advocate for the built environment. In response to Jacobs’ work, this award recognises local women for their outstanding achievements in raising public awareness, empathy and understanding of urban change.

We at MRB know that Lucy has (seemingly!) endless energy, passion and knowledge when advocating for Birmingham and more specifically for Balsall Heath and Moseley Road Baths and so this award is very well deserved.

The award is organised by the members of Save Smallbrook, a consortium of Brutiful Birmingham, Birmingham Modernist Society, C20 Society, Zero Carbon House, and Birmingham Fair Housing, supported by Birmingham City University Department of Architecture and the Built Environment. We wanted to share with you the reason that Lucy was chosen as the winner:

“The panel were in agreement that Lucy has made an outstanding contribution to the promotion of the repurposing of heritage buildings. At both a strategic and practical level the influence of her work will be long lasting.  Previously working for the National Trust Lucy developed the National Trust’s first city strategy for activating historic buildings and green spaces.  But it is more for her work at a local level that this award is granted. Lucy has shown leadership and commitment over many years to the rescue and redevelopment of Moseley Road Baths and Library. The panel commended Lucy for her persistence against challenging odds in the very lengthy campaign for Moseley Road baths.

The success is in no small part due to her ability to work with a range of Stakeholders and at the same time ensure that the voices of local residents were central to plans for the future of the building. The Panel recognised Lucy as a first-class networker, always alert to what is happening at the local and wider level.”

Lucy, in true MRB style we will toast you with some Elton John zero-secco!!!!

We're hiring!

Fancy being the first ever Chief Executive of the best local pool in the world?!

We're a Grade II* listed Edwardian swimming baths in Balsall Heath, Birmingham. The only pre-WW1 baths in the country to have continuously hosted public swimming since opening. We are in the middle of a fully-funded £35.7m transformation, and looking for the person who'll lead us across the finish line, and into our next hundred years - a new era of swimming, wellbeing, heritage and community life.

This is a once-in-a-career opportunity. You'll join as co-client of the capital project, build an operational team from scratch, and lead us as we open our doors again in late 2028 and beyond. The fully restored Baths will be transformed to host an inclusive swimming operation in the Gala Pool, a myriad of events and gatherings in Pool 2, a Community Gym and Wellbeing Hub (with baths!) in the Slipper Baths. We’ll be physically connected to Balsall Heath Library for the first time, and will be transforming the yard behind the Baths into a community garden.

You could be from any sector. You might already be a CEO - or a senior leader ready to step up.

If you're brilliant with people, genuinely committed to community-led approaches, and excited by the prospect of bringing (swimming) joy back to Balsall Heath - we'd love to hear from you.

Years of leaks have taken their toll on the ceilings at MRB, leaving cracks, holes and damaged plasterwork behind.

The team is now carefully repairing these areas, ready for the next stage of restoration. Once the repairs are complete, the ceilings will be replastered, helping to bring them back to their former glory.

One of the most recognisable features of MRB is the beautiful and vibrant glazed brickwork.

The bricks, made by the Stourbridge Glazed Brick Company, come in ivory, green, turquoise blue and cream, and give the interior of the Baths its distinctive colour and character.

They’ve been part of the building since it opened in 1907 and are one of the details people often remember most.

As part of the restoration, we’re making sure the brickwork can remain a key feature of the building.

The foyer stairs leading up to the mezzanine have had a good clean. The white paint has been removed, revealing the surface underneath. As you can see from the before and after photos, this was a very satisfying job to complete!

You might have to use your imagination for this one... it's two newly constructed lift shafts!

They might not look exciting right now but these photos show the new lift shafts for the library and for the Baths. They will allow accessible access to the mezzanine floor of the library and the upper floor of MRB.
